What About Wednesday: Bloom

Aloha My scrappy friends!! Today is my last blog post in this design team season. It is definitely sad to see some of the ladies I have become really good friends with go. Though I am excited for them and the future adventures I know they will have. I am also so excited to see what this new team brings to the table. Pushing and inspiring each other to create and make even better projects and layouts.

Since we are thinking along the lines of new beginnings, I decided to make a spring layout. When we bought our new house this past year we didn’t really know all the flowers and plants the previous had planted in the yard. By the time we looked at the house it was summer and most of the spring flowers were gone. The owner had also used rocks to cover the flower beds.

I am not sure if this was to have a cleaner look or because of all the rain. But this spring as green shoots grew up from the rocks the kids and I started to get really excited about all the growth. What would be coming from these leaves and how many.

We got lucky and had some daffodils, some tulips, a lilac type tree, and these really pretty pink and purple flowers. covered in droplets of rain they just glimmer, I took out my nice DSLR and captured their beauty. I am glad I did because a few days later my girls picked over half the flowers and then the rain just knocked them down. They were gorgeous and regal looking for the short time they made their appearance.

I knew that when making a layout with this image, I wanted a collection that would really bring out the colors in the picture. The Pink Paislee Paige Evans Oh My Heart Collection has tons of flowers and purples. Starting with white cardstock, I cut it down to 8 1/2 by 11 and then matted it with a pretty green watercolor patterned paper.  Using this size really just makes the photo be front and center and the focal piece.

At the top of the layout I added some purple acrylic paint and a stencil with Shimmerz Paste-eez Salt of the Earth paste. I wanted a light stenciled pattern over the purple. I knew my photo would cover most of it so I only needed it to be subtle.

Under the photo I built an embellishment cluster on a white doily. I layered a tag, some die cut flowers, some chipboard pieces, and some small grey feltie hearts. I used my tiny attacher to adhere some of my pieces for some metal texture.

I used gold glitter thickers on the bottom of the photo for that WOW factor. These are my favorite thickers, they really add a punch of amazingness especially when you add them right on the photo.

On the bottom half of the layout I layered strips of patterned paper from the Pink Paislee Paige Evans Oh My Heart collection. I used colors that were already in my photo, except for the pink. I had wished that color was in there just because a dash of pink always makes things look better.

In different areas of the layers I added die cut flowers from the collection. I stapled some on, used my tape runner and also pop dotted some of the flowers. I really wanted to create a lot of dimension in the layers.

I also tucked in some wood hearts from the Wild at Heart collection and some Love U Tons Felt Hearts.

with the chipboard and feltie hearts all layered in the papers everything looks all nestled in. Kinda reminds me of the flowers nestled in the rocks. Lots of textures going on.

All along the bottom layer I added A Mermaid’s Tale, Hot Right Now and Blues Travelers sequins on the flowers. I really like how this make those flowers stand out and adds something fun to that bottom layer.

I scattered sequins all down the left side of the left as well. I mostly used the little tiny silver stars. They are so cute and with my silhouette pick up tool, they are so easy to get on the layout.

Here is a look at the whole layout.

I also made a process video to go along with this layout for my personal youtube channel. Which you can watch right here below.

JUST LOVELY

Hello hello everyone!  The layout I am bringing you today is of my two grandchildren at the train museum, which they totally enjoyed.  Spending time with these two is a lot of fun, don’t get me wrong there is some discipline involved, well not much.  They are pretty good with their Nana and I truly adore being with them and they visit I just hate to say goodbye.

With that said today is my last post with the Spiegelmom Design Team.  I had so much fun with Jody and the gals on the team and I so want to do it again in the near future.  All of the products that are in the shop are amazing and if you have not ordered yet, I don’t know what your waiting for… you are missing out on the best sequin mixes, texture paste, cork die cuts, felt die cuts, and many other goodies.  I enjoyed using all of them on my layouts and with this layout, I used a lot of the goodies from the shop on it as well.  So let’s get started!

I used some the Dazzlerz, in “Coral Me Crazy” texture paste to make the small textured circles. The sequins I used are called Passion Flower, which I spread across the top of my layout and I also used a doily from the shop. Love this!

Here is a close up of the texture paste in Coral Me Crazy and the stencil I used is from Hero Arts.

The sequins are just fabulous!  Love this mixture of the Passion Flower mixture. The paper circles are punched out of some paper from my stash.

The wood veneer is from a Studio Calico kit from a while ago.

Here is a close up of the sequins again.  The tissue circles are from an older Felicity Jane kit.

I thought I would do some hidden journaling, which I used a glassine bag as one of the layers so I can slide the journal card right under the photo by a tap that I stapled onto a 3×4 journal card.  This is something you can do with your layout if you have a lot of embellishments covering it.

Thank you so much for stopping by today and I also want to thank all of you who have left such wonderful comments each time I posted a layout.  This has been one of the best teams I have ever been on and I am going to miss it.  Take care all of you and don’t forget to support Spiegelmom Scraps by stopping by the shop and placing your oder today.  You can use Felicia15 till the end of the month for 15% off your order.  Bye bye everyone!

What About Wednesday: Mixed Media Layout

13932877_10210738580967273_2143640393516853298_n

Aloha!! It’s Hannah here today!!

How is your week going? My hubby had a 4 day weekend and that always throws my week off. But I thankfully got an extra day off to scrap all day. As much as the week is all crazy, I can never say no to an extra day of all day scrapbooking. I know I am lucky to have a spouse who kicks me to my scrap room.

Since I had all day to play I decided to play with some mixed media. I like to my time and really play. I used to use media a lot more than I do now, and when I pick up my paints it’s like riding a bike. I love the ride playing with mixed media takes me on.

I started with some clear gesso on white card stock. I wanted a little protection since I really didn’t know what I would end up using on the background. I like to go into my layouts open to whatever feels right. Sometimes this works well for me, sometimes it doesn’t turn out quite right. I am ok with this journey though. It helps me learn and grow as a crafter and scrapbooker.

I grabbed some acrylic paints and cup of water. Typically on a canvas you wouldn’t want to mix water and acrylic paint. The water effects the structure of the paint. On a canvas this could mean the paint could not adhere properly. I think in the case of paper though, water mixed with the acrylic paint it really helps it be more fluid, and dry quicker. I haven’t noticed that the water has affected my paint on the paper in the layouts I have made in the past. ( I say this as a warning, that any media that isn’t photo safe, could have an effect on the photo if you don’t use enough layers between the paint and the photo. Use your gut, with this info. If you feel weird and wrong for any unknown product and it’s ability to effect your photo, don’t do it. For me I make many of these layouts for my enjoyment and it doesn’t bother me. That is just me though.)

I used my paint brush to add drops of the watered down acrylic paint. I do this technique often. It is easy, and it’s hard to mess up. You can add as many or as few droplets to your page for the look you want. I like to mix big and small paint drops.

This is an image I took while my paint was drying.  I added each color. Then dried it for less than a minute with my heat tool. I then let it air dry for about 15 minutes. I added blue plus signs with a thin watercolor brush. I thought this would be fun. Seeing plus signs sticking out throughout the layout. I also added paint lines on the corners of the layout. To tell you the truth this is part I wish I would have left out. I wished I would have hand drawn lines with a black ink pen. But I didn’t and This is where you have to decide to keep going and see how the layout will turn out or stop and toss it. It really is a personal thing to choose. Some days I have been known to start pulling things off a layout in the middle of making it because I hated it. It again is part of this process of learning and growing and becoming the scrapbooker you want to be.

Once dry I started to build my layers. This is my favorite part. I love finding, searching for all these bits and pieces and fitting them in like a puzzle.

For this layout I used one 4×4 square photo. I really enjoy this size for building layers. I really try to switch things up and not use it all the time though, because it is easy for things to feel the same when I use this size all the time. Even though depending on the papers you layer each layout can look completely different.

IMG_3009

I love this photo of my puppy!! At the time of this picture (when I took it) she was about 5 or so months. So curious about everything I was doing in my scrap room. One day I was trying to take pictures of my layout with her inside. She wanted to be in on the action. I am so glad I took this image while trying to hold her in my legs to keep her away my layout. It really makes my smile. Having a small puppy can be so much fun, even though it really makes everything much more difficult to get done. Haha!!

While building my layers I grabbed papers I thought would match the photo and papers that I had laying around. I love mixing sizes and fitting them in around.

IMG_3004

I added a white doily and a medium shipping tag in my layers. I love the texture they add. Also the shapes are much different than the strips of patterned paper which works really well the pull everything in, but make it unique.

IMG_3005

I tucked die cuts in my layers too. This is the fun part of layering, finding pieces that are odd and  making them fit. Sometimes all it is a color that works. Like this die cut.. Hello.

IMG_3007

The color worked and I love how it just fits.

I added some grey feltie hearts on this layout. They are my favorite!! Literally they are amazing. Paired with some white thread and a flair badge from The Spiegel Mom Scraps collab with Accent Scrapbooking. I love how the green in you is picked up by the strip of green paper I used.

I scattered some Holly Berries Sequins around the whole layout. I really like how this holiday inspired mix works because of it’s nature feel.

IMG_3006

Especially with these wood pieces that I picked up in the clearance part of the shop.

IMG_3003

I really played up on the fun and silliness of the photo with this layout. I really like when the tone of the photo matches with the layout.

IMG_3011

I love using stickers for titles especially when I mix that with Thickers. These white ones are so puffy and fun.

Here is the whole layout.

What About Wednesday: Using the negative of a cut file

13932877_10210738580967273_2143640393516853298_n

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!! How is everyone’s winter/summer going? I live in Washington State and this year has had some really crazy weather for this area. Usually rain is the norm, but we have actually had snow quite a few times already this winter.

A bit of it is pretty nice, since it has been seven years since we have seen more than a dusting of snow covering the ground. Though I am not gonna lie though that I have been thinking about Hawaii quite a bit when my fingers and toes are freezing from the cold.

Just this past weekend we got about a foot of snow. Which is a lot for our area. It literally snowed for 24 hours. It was quite beautiful for a while, though my heart still cried out to another time just last year where I sat on the beach enjoying and taking in the waves from the North Shore. The sand warms your toes, the sun kisses your cheeks and the breeze has this special smell of tropical flowers and salt mixed together.

That is what this layout is all about. I used a picture from this weekend and a picture from last February. I printed them off at 3X4 because I knew I was making a 9X12 layout. I really wanted my background to be visible.

I used a cut file that was designed by Laura for January. If you check out the cut file section you should be able to get it on the blog.  it reminded me of shells so I really wanted to use it.

I decided to cut it out of striped colored pattern paper, I do this from time to time. especially with a paper like this bright colored from Cute Girl. It’s super fun but not knowing how to use it can throw you off. Using it with a cute file allows you to get all the colors on a layout but in smaller amounts.

IMG_2599

When I pulled it off the mat I really was inspired by the negative space of the cut file, or the inside of the cut file. I used liquid glue to attach the negative pieces down to some modeling paste mixed with Shimmerz Dazzlerz in Licorice Stick.

At this point I didn’t know if I was just plain crazy for spending twenty minutes glueing down the cut file until I pulled off the main part. It looked so cool.  It definitely reminded me of tropical Hawaii. I knew my pictures would be perfect.

I backed the white card stock with modeling paste and the negative cut file onto a dark gray patterned of stars. I really wanted the color to pop. I outlined with black pen around the white card stock.

I tucked in a shipping tag with blue baker’s twine at the top of the layout. Later I ended up sticking a feltie cloud and small clothespin at the top too. The first current picture I held onto with the clothes pin. I also added a frame and some cloud puffy stickers.

IMG_2616

I added the date in pen on the photo at the bottom. I also used a flair bottom that we got last month from our collab from Cuts 2 Luv that said Baby it’s cold outside. It was perfect for that photo, because it was cold this weekend.  I splinted some sequins from Let’s Be Mermaids and My Clementine sequin mixes.

IMG_2615

I added a couple of other clothespins at the bottom of my layout. I really love the way this adds interest and dimension to the layout.

IMG_2612

To better see the cut file I put the second photo one the left side as far over as I could. IMG_2617

I layered behind the photo a white doily spritzed with Shimmerz Vibez Eggnoggin’ and Razzleberry . I wanted a bit of color that you might see in the sand and sun on the doily. I layered some ephemera with hearts on it above the picture. The wood chips used to be in the store and were from Studio Calico. They are super fun to layer with, and have a natural feel.

IMG_2614

I also added a feltie cloud to mirror what I did to the top photo. I added more sprinkles of My Clementine and Let’s Be Mermaids sequins. I love how these colors really play off of the bright colors in the Cute Girl Collection from Crate Paper.

IMG_2609

The colors are so bright and inviting. They worked perfectly with my ocean photo. The waves are so inviting too. Especially with a day filled with snow.

To match the brightness I used some really old Thickers from an old Dear Lizzy Collection. This made for a title. Mixed with the puffy stickers of the Cute Girl Collection and the sequins scattered around it really tied together the feeling I wanted to share.

IMG_2611

Even though my feelings about the snow and the beach are shining through on this layout, I still added a few sentences and tucked them behind the tag, in-between the white card stock and the patterned paper. I didn’t want to write on the negative cut file, I really wanted that to be the focal point. I did however want a few words somewhere about how I felt. Hidden journaling is a good way to do that.

Here is a look at the whole layout.

Look below and you can watch my process video from Youtube.

I hope you are inspired to try to use the negative of a cut file. I know I save them on occasion,  (I have a drawer full of them actually). This kind of layout is perfect way to use them up and tell a fun story. Because times and things change. You move, the weather patterns change, our routines change and the things of last year my be so different from this year! It was fun to see this difference side by side.

Have an inspired week!! Don’t forget to share with us the layouts you are making with your SpiegelMom Scraps products in our Facebook Group.
