Retro Canvas Tutorial with Karla!
Hello friends! Karla here again today to share a tutorial with you, showing you how I created this pretty canvas. Just by following a few easy steps you can quickly create a beautiful canvas for yourself or a gift for someone special! Since our theme this month is ‘Take Us Back June’ I thought this Prima paper doll stamp by Julie Nutting would be perfect, combined with the vintage 7gypsies Architextures papers and Prima armoire tag. I’ve created a little tutorial, so you can see just how easy it is to create a canvas yourself!
Step 1- I used a Dollar Store canvas and chose a few pieces of paper – these are from the 7gypsies Architextures paper pad – love <3! I cut and tore them to fit on my canvas.
Step 2 – I painted the edges of my canvas with Tattered Angels High Impact light blue paint, stamped and coloured my Prima doll, paper pieced her clothing and cut out some paper elements (banners) from the 7gypsies paper pad. Ok, how cool are her boots – really?!!
Step 3 – I used Mod Podge to glue on the paper elements and the Prima armoire tag by painting a coat of the Mod Podge, laying on the papers, and painting another coat on top. I glued the doll’s clothing on and used Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam to paint the Julie Nutting paper doll chipboard pieces. The Glimmer Glam gives such a high sheen with pieces of glitter – it’s really neat!
Step 4 – I used a clear gel medium through a Tim Holtz stencil and then added Ranger Distress Glitter on while it was still wet so the glitter stuck to the gel. I also added some very cool 7gypsies Architextures rubons around my canvas to give a vintage, distressed stamped look. I glued on a couple more paper elements – these records came in a Retro paper pack from Michaels!
Step 5 – I added my paper doll, chipboard pieces and SpiegelMom Scraps Chunky Cork Heart – which I painted gold with the Glimmer Glam. I hot glued a black velvet ribbon around the edge of the canvas to cover any staples that might show. Now comes the FUN part!! Digging through all my sequins to see which ones I want to use 🙂 I decided to go with Jaded Hearts, Fairy Garden, Neon Summer, Sparkle Power and Free Spirit sequin mixes! They are all so pretty!!
I used some of the flowers from a couple different mixes to add to the brim of her hat, using Glossy Accents to adhere them. Next, I grabbed some of the beautiful gold sequins in Free Spirit to add around the picture frame. The message inside is an Architextures rubon, and I covered it with Glossy Accents to give it a glassy look.
The pretty flowers from Fairy Garden worked great to add as drawer pulls on the side table.
I tucked a cool camera in with the records and added some sequins to the drawers of the armoire.
I love the way the gold shines on the Chunky Cork Heart! A few more sequin clusters around the canvas give it just a bit more bling!
Here’s a look at the beautiful sequin mixes I used – Jaded Hearts, Fairy Garden, Neon Summer, Sparkle Power and Free Spirit!
