What About Wednesday: Watercolor Mixed Media

Aloha!!! I am loving the bright colors in many of the collections coming out this spring. the pastel and vibrant colors make me happy and ready for the warmer weather and longer days.

This week I really wanted to play around with the colors I have been inspired by. I started off with some white cardstock and some watercolors. There is just something about playing with paint and stencils that really help get my creative juices flowing.

Because I was using watercolor I used some clear gesso on the cardstock. I really like the way the paint flows on a gesso’d background better. I love the way the two colors mix and pool to form different colors, and darker or lighter colors depending on how the paint lays on the background.

I used the watercolor area as my focus area for behind on my photo. I almost wanted the watercolor to become part of the layering process.

After the watercolor dried, I used one of my favorite stencils from Amy Tangerine. It is a small 3X4 size stencil with triangles on it. I took a dark black pen and used it to outline around the triangles and draw lines inside the triangles to create a fun triangle. I used the stencil in many different areas across my white cardstock. I really wanted the pop of black on the white and colors.

I matted the white cardstock with a fun and funky triangle patterned paper from the Paige Evans Oh My Heart Collection.

This collection matches the attitude and feel for the picture that I wanted to scrap. A picture of my daughter, Cayden with a very high ponytail. I remember when I took that photo, too. She was really excited about having a really cool hairstyle and ponytail. She wanted it as high up as I could put it. Even though I didn’t understand why, I couldn’t help but help her. She always get so giddy about looking hip and in style, even if her fashion choices are ones I don’t understand. Maybe it’s part of being a mom, not understanding the choices but enjoying the experience and the smiles. My daughter looks so cute and I am glad to capture these moments of her and her personality.

On my photo I added a chipboard triangle patterned frame. I love how the triangles on the frame are colored and the background paper is mostly black and white. In the corner of the frame I added a big die cut piece.

Behind my photo I layered thin strips of patterned paper and a white doily.

Around my photo I added some more chipboard pieces and a big cork ampersand.

With the title, layers of paper, ampersand and A Mermaid’s Tale Sequin mix I love the way everything looks layered and peeks out from around the photo.

Another fun thing I decided to do to make this layout different, was alter some feltie hearts. I wanted to add some elements that were already on my layout like the mini staples I added to the bottom corner when I matted with patterned paper.

I took the larger navy, white and yellow feltie hearts and cut some of them in half. I layered the cut heart on top of the uncut heart. I then added two tiny staples on the edge of the cut heart. They look super cute, just like Cayden.

I added these feltie hearts throughout the layout. At the top of my layout I added some more strips of paper and some more sequins.

It really adds an unique embellishment and keeps it feeling fresh, just like Cayden’s top know hair style.

I love adding techniques like watercolor to make my layouts unique. It’s a way to be creative an make it me on a page. I use it to help tell my story. I hope you are inspired to use techniques and papers and embellishments to inspire you to tell your story. Use it to have fun on your layouts.

Here is one final look at my layout.

Have a great week!! I hope I see you around the Facebook group and the community sharing the projects and layouts using the SpiegelMom Scraps products you have bought.
