What About Wednesday: Pumpkin Soup

Aloha Sparklers!! I have been a little obsessed with documenting the autumn this year. I am pretty sure it is because of the newness that it is. After having spent 6 years in warm places, or mostly warm throughout the year, Autumn was not really noticeable. I would always look for things that reminded me of back home, but really it never felt like Autumn. So I am loving this weather for now, even though I know it may be a whole new story I am telling next year.

One of the things I love about this time of the year, especially if you live in a place where the season changes are very noticeable, is the food changes that come with the weather changes. Have I mentioned that I went to culinary school in college?! I love food, and how it brings my family together.

When it starts getting chilly, the best thing is a nice bowl of warm goodness. It helps heat your insides and makes you feel all comfy and cozy. One of my favorite things to make in the Autumn is Pumpkin Soup. In my mind it isn’t Autumn until I make Pumkpin Soup. (Even when I made this in Hawaii it still lacked that true feeling that the chilly weather brings to this soup.)

This every year tradition started when I was a teenager. My mom found this great soup, and now we just know it by heart. The best recipes are the ones that you have memorized because you make it so much . This is why I wanted to make this layout and what will be a new album. I want to have an album where I can put all these recipes and things that I love about this season of the year, the things that help make it cozy and warm. The things that we do every year, and could easily forget where those traditions come from if I don’t document it now.

I plan to include recipe and ephemera to this album to give it that homey feel. That old scrapbook feel. My hope is to add silhouette cut leaves, a shipping tag and a journaling card from Simple Stories Reset Girl Collection. Then sprinkle in some sequins (Falling Leaves Sequin mix) and it will be perfect.

img_0397

I used some cork stars and a doily to help tie in the rustic look. The thread adds some texture amount my layers of cut leaves from scraps of old patterned paper. This apple wood button from Shimelle’s collection Go Now Go reminds me of the apple relish I put on my Pumpkin Soup.

These journaling cards add such a cool touch.

Making Mixed Media Easy

Aloha It’s Hannah here with you today. I am super excited about my first post here on the SpiegelMom Scraps blog!!

Mixed Media is super trendy but can be really intimidating. There is so many things that could go wrong. It can be really messy and unpredictable. If you do it right it really can look awesome and make an unique background that is perfect for the story you are wanting to tell.

Pinterest is a fun place to gain some inspiration for backgrounds. I love using textures and patterns to inspire me. I have been loving circles lately. On Pinterest I had seen a background with tiny circles on it. Using tiny circles in a few areas is a easy way to add color and media to a background without being complicated as well.

I decided to use the end of my pencil easer as my paint brush to dab circles on my white cardstock. I used Shimmerz Dazzlerz in Gummy Bear Blue and Sour apple Green because I knew I wanted to scrap a spring picture of my kids running.

IMG_7915

By randomly places the dots around the layout, overlapping the circles you create a background that is unique. The eraser makes the dots imperfect and the Dazzlers is a little thick which gives texture to the dots when they dry.

You could let each color dry in-between colors, but actually wanted some of the Dazzlerz to mix a little creating a new color. This kind of background could be really busy or really subtle depending on how many dots you add. I went for the middle ground, and added a decent amount but left quite a bit of white space.

Something else that helps add personality to a background is to stamp on it. I have tons of planner or smaller stamps. I knew my little heart stamp would be perfect. I added open and closed hearts to change it up. I just placed them throughout the dots. I used a black Stazon stamp ink, but this would look darling in a different shade ink close to the Dazzlerz colors.

I let the background dry over night. It really didn’t need it though. Allowing you background cardstock to dry before adding layers on it is key. Air drying is best because it cuts on the paper from warping too much. I often use a heat gun slightly to help speed the drying time. Letting me follow through with my thought process on a layout.

I didn’t want to cover most of the dots and hearts I created so I kept my layers behind my photo simple. I used a large glassine bag as one layer. I like the way the background softly peeks through the sides of the bag. I also matted my photo in white. I added two laters of patterned paper in fun artsy and watercolor type of patterns. This helps tie in with the homemade background.

IMG_8096

I also added some very thin washi tape on the background. I added a diagonally striped patterned paper on the side and bottom of the tape. I wanted to use these two areas to help ground my photo and build my embellishment clusters on them.

Take look at each cluster. I absolutely love how they turned out!!

IMG_8089

The little felt clouds in the store are perfect for this layout. I also took a patterned that had clouds on it and fussy cut them out.

IMG_8094

By adding pop dots to some of the clouds and layering them, it really makes the clouds feel like they are floating.

IMG_8092

I used word phrase stickers in similar colors and some die cuts it helps add some other shapes into the mix.

I finished with lots of sequins from both the Spring Blooms and A Day In the Woods Mixes. I love how both these colors picks up colors in the papers and mixed media I used. In the end I just think they look cute and fun!! Cause who doesn’t secretly love sequins!?!

IMG_8088

Inspired by Sunshine and playing in the sun, which my kids love to do. Actually they just love to run around outside, rain or shine, but more in the sun!! I started with a scripted die cut piece. I like the look of a title with different colors and shaped fonts and this layout it just went perfectly to tie all the colors together from the layout.

I hope you were inspired today. Inspired to do a little mixed media on your layouts or try something a little different. I find these things really help me grow my scrappy mind, even if they don’t end up working on a page or project.

have a great Day and I can’t wait to see you around!!

Tuesday’s Talent ~ Round 2 with Amy Lee

Hi ladies and gents! Today I’m bringing to you a series of perfume bottle cards. I’ve been itching to make something like this but there doesn’t seem to be any perfume bottle stamps out there. So I’m going to make my own!

I started by searching for various perfume bottle images on Google. I replaced the brand names with sentiments and friends’ names. I used some special fonts to add character to the perfume bottles. Here are some of the fonts I used: MA SexyPapyrus and Noodle Script. Then I printed them out and fussy-cut them.

@spiegelmomscraps @jodyspiegelhoff @thecraftbunny, #spiegelmomscraps #thecraftbunny #scrapbook #cardmaking #watercolor #washitape #sequins #loosesequins #etsy #craft #youtube #processvideo

I kept the perfume bottles black and white and created colorful backgrounds to highlight them. All the backgrounds are created with acrylic paints using different techniques – paint splattering, smooching and regular painting. I was just playing by ear.

I added washi tape to ground the focal point of the card. Finally, I finished the cards with sequins from SpiegelMomScrapShop and daisy cabochons from craftsutopia (ETSY). The sequins complement the colored background very well. I love the effect! The daisy cabochon reminds me of Marc Jacobs so I added it to the perfume bottle and it looked really cute.@spiegelmomscraps @jodyspiegelhoff @thecraftbunny, #spiegelmomscraps #thecraftbunny #scrapbook #cardmaking #watercolor #washitape #sequins #loosesequins #etsy #craft #youtube #processvideo

I hope you like these cards as much as I do. Please click HERE if you’d like to see the process video. Have a wonderful day!

#HSCaptureLife: Day 11 ~ Today Was Totally Happy

Hello everyone! Welcome to my new blog subbies!! It’s great to ‘meet’ you here. I’d love to know how you found my blog and where you’re from!! Don’t be shy!! Please share in the comments!

Today I’m sharing another layout, inspired by Heidi Swapp’s Capture Life prompts. This layout is inspired by Day 11: Today was totally ______. This day was totally happy for sure! Abby & I planted flowers while our big girls were at school. We had a blast digging in the dirt, even if we were a bit chilly.  Some of the flower pots (not pictured here) were also for my Girl Scout troop’s bridging ceremony in June so this was extra special for us!!  In scrapbooking, and in life, the truly important things are these little everyday moments. Scrapbooking these moments is what I live for.  We live to remember!  Our lives are always crazy busy: soccer, school, gymnastics, Girl Scouts (2 troops), religious education, school, work and let’s pray we all stay healthy!! Treasuring these everyone moments means the world to us!

I still have some fabulous partial Clique Kits left that I’m trying to kill, while mixing in embellishments from my stash & my shop. These next several months I’ll be doing my best to kill various kits I have on hand & destash my stash!! We are close to breaking ground on our new home & the less stuff I have to move the faster I’ll have things back up & running in our new home!! Challenge accepted!

This layout uses Heidi Swapp’s bold & beautiful September Skies line along with some newer Heidi Swapp chipboard pieces from my LSS, a white doily, Freckled Fawn paper clips & a couple washi tapes. I also loosely followed this sketch! Below you’ll find a link to my process video for this layout on YouTube.

You can also watch my process video for this layout HERE!!  You’ll also see my using my FAVORITE new adhesive runner, the EZ Runner Grand!  This thing is smooth as butter and super easy to refill!  If you’d like to see a real life comparison between the EZ Runner and the Scotch ATG you must check out THIS VIDEO!!  The EZ Runner is half the weight and the refill just drops right into the tape fun.. No more wrapping adhesive around anything!!

Thank you for much for spending your time with me today.  I hope you’ve enjoyed my layout and have been inspired to capture your every day moments and document them!  Accept the challenge and get started today!

Until next time, do something creative today!

Highlighting the Green Chevron Washi!

Hi, everyone!!  Kat here today to show off another one of my favorite products from the SMS store.  Last month, I shared the awesomeness of the gold doilies.  This month, I want to share how great the green chevron washi can be.  Since I always associate the color green with the month of March, I figured it was a good product to feature.

This page came together very quickly for me.  I just measured off the top 5 inches of my cardstock and covered it in the washi tape.  I alternated the direction of the chevrons, which ended up creating an optical illusion of sorts (seriously, stare at it for a while…it’s a bit trippy!)  That was a happy accident!  Once I was done with that, I added simple embellishments, a few paint drips and then I was done.  This layout came together in about 20 minutes!
