Light Up Sequins

Hi there, Laura here today.  I recently got some new toys – namely some tiny LED stickers and copper tape.  During my first session playing with them, I knew I wanted to try and light up some sequins…

IMG_9592

I cut a few flowers on my Silhouette Cameo and backed them with vellum.  I backed the negative of the flower with patterned paper.  I lay down my copper tape and LED stickers over the patterned paper.  When I offset the flowers slightly I managed to cover the majority of the copper tape and keep the nice aesthetic.

IMG_9584

I went for a multi-font title.  The pink and yellow would be too much for the whole sentence and I wanted my photo and the lights to remain the focus of the layout.

IMG_9583

I placed my battery behind the P of pick and when pressed all three of the flowers light up…

IMG_9588

I’ve used Moonshine Delight and Holiday Traditions for my sparkle.  I specifically picked Moonshine as it picked up the light beneath and magnified it.

Here is the video…

Thanks for stopping by!

Scraplift Sunday with Crafty Meggy

Scraplift Sunday

Hello my fellow SMS lovers!! I hope you’re having a great weekend! It’s always so sad when it comes to an end, but I really do love having my laid back Sundays.

I have another Scraplift for you today. I love going through my Scrapliftable board on pinterest, but this past week I was actually on pinterest for a different project and I found this layout:

feb5Scraplift

I really love the 3 patterned papers in the background and I thought doing something like that would look good with a cut file on top of it.

Hey Honey

This is the free cut file for the month of february. You can get it here in the cut file section of the blog or click the image.

feb5scraplift1footer

This is the layout I ended up making. I am super happy with how it turned out!!

feb5scraplift2

This year I have decided to really take my weight loss up a gear. It’s always a goal of mine to lose weight every year, but I usually give up after a couple weeks. I started going to the gym again a couple weeks into January and I took a few photos of the first workout. It was a slow one, but I am really proud of myself for sticking with it and going! These photos document before, during and after my workout.

feb5scraplift3

I really love the new I Cork U and Love U Tons felties hearts in the shop. I layered them here in this cluster on top of a white lace doily and also used the Strawberry Bubblegum sequin mix.

feb5scraplift4

I used an older Dear Lizzy thickers alpha and put a cute little heart sequin to dot each of the i’s.

feb5scraplift5

I put my journaling and another cluster in the bottom right hand corner.

feb5scraplift6

I used a couple yellow sequins from the Pocket Full of Posies mix, as well as a mini glassine bag, 2 large manila tags and raspberry May arts string.

Thanks so much for stopping by today!! You can watch my process video below on my YouTube channel. Make sure to use my code, Megan15, at checkout to receive 15% off your total order! Happy Scrapping!

Backing Cut Files

Hi Chaps.  Laura here today using one of our free cut files.  You can find all our cut files here, and tag your Instagram photos with #smscutfile when you use our files – we love to see your work.

IMG_9431

I have just got my hands on the latest sequin releases.  My favourite (I love them all, but you know!) are the little stars ‘Stargazer‘ but I was also really taken with the yellow mix ‘What’s Up Buttercup‘.  Using them as my cue I pulled out some yellow papers and an assortment of black cardstock with different finishes.

IMG_9433

I spent some time cutting out pieces and backing the cut file.  I tried to spread the colours and patterns out as evenly as I could.  Once the hexagons were backed I added some black ink splatters and a sprinkling of sequins.  Very clean and simple, but also bold with a big impact.

IMG_9440

All that was needed to finish it off were the name and date tucked in, and a final ribbon tab for an extra splash of yellow.

I love the white space and the limited colour palette.  How about you?

Laura

What About Wednesday: December Daily Without Photos

13932877_10210738580967273_2143640393516853298_n

Aloha Sparklers!! We are knee deep in December. How are your December projects coming along? If your December is anything like mine, there are many obstacles (many good) that is causing me delays in my craft room.

I hope you are not too down on yourself. Decembers are busy, there are so many activities planned. Germs come out of the woodwork. The weather throws curveballs. We all love to see December and fun winter projects but they can be easily done when things slow done. During Christmas break or when the weather starts getting dreary. Just remember to save all the posts and pin the projects you want to use as inspiration!!

img_1555

On this note I wanted to talk about something different I am doing this year while working on my December Daily. This year for various reasons I am waiting to batch print all my December Daily and holiday photos together. Which ultimately means that I have no pictures in my album right now. I still do want to work on it while everything is happening. I scrap the best when I am documenting in the moment. Putting down on paper the things that are going on right now. That isn’t always possible though picture wise.

December Daily is one of those projects that works so well for this technique or decision to wait to add photos. Here are a few tips for making this making your album without the photos work>

  1. Remember to continue to take lots of photos. You will still need these photos at the end, use a photo a day prompt (there are tons on Pinterest) and look for stories that you want to tell in your December Daily. Like the stories behind your favorite ornament or how your kids routine changes in December. What your song playlist is this year, or what cookie is your spouses favorite to snack on. Look for those moments to capture. You can always narrow down what photos you use for that day later.
  2. Keep a notebook for writing down the things your children say, the things you thought about your day. Maybe write down some prompts you want to include in your album. I have a page for each day, so that I can write my thoughts of the day. What I want to focus on for that day.
  3. Pick your pictures before you create your days page. It is so easy to make a page ahead of time, but when push comes to shove, You really can’t have a page set unless you know what images you want to use. I use my notebook to write down the images I plan to include. When I build my page I then know where my pictures will go. This helps so I am not moving cards around when I finally get my pictures back after Christmas.
  4. Have fun!! Whether you have bought a kit, or using stuff from your stash keep your pages fun. Especially this time of the year when we are all busy and doing lots of fun things, this project is about the fun we are having. If you aren’t having fun it is okay to rethink your process to make it enjoyable and fun.

When you have gotten all your photos printed off, just add them to the pages and maybe add another sequin or two and then it will be all done. I think these tips can be helpful however you want to implement your album, simple, using all your favorite embellishments, lots of journaling, no journaling, how ever your focus too. There is no reason why not having photos should stop you from starting your album now while you are in the moment. Unless you want to wait 😉

Here is a look at what I did for pages 8 and 9 in my December Daily album. I am mixing up different sizes throughout the album. This helps for days I have lots of photos or on a day like day 8 where I don’t really have many photos. This spread is a SNAP 6×8 protector with 2 4×4 squares and 4 2×2 squares down the sides.

img_1554

I used the cut file for this month to make snowflakes to add to my day card. I like to have each day numbered. This year I am using lots of different fonts for the numbers. It is perfect since I am using mostly stash for my album this year.

I kept this card simple and didn’t add any sequins since I added the stars. Even though I contemplated using the translucent big sequins in the store.

img_1556

I chose a dark bottom I am figuring I will add my journaling with a typewriter font on this card. The edges only showing for a mat. I like to use my computer to type up some of the journaling in my December Daily. I am going to add the journaling when I add the photos, or at least when I am closer to being done. I will mostly just finish it all up in one day.

On the sides I added two small shakers with a silver hand made bows and Evergreen Bough sequins mix.

Then added circles to the two middle squares. One circle was a gift tag from last year. The other circle I cut an punched out from papers.

sms-december

Super simple but oh so much sequin fun!!

img_1560

Day 9 It snowed!! It hardly ever snows in the area I live, so my kids were so very excited to wake up and still see snow. Even though it was now raining, I let the kids go playing outside in the snow before breakfast. I know that a photo of the kids playing outside will be on this day and big. Who doesn’t like a big photo? I wanted something small though for the journaling for that photo. It will let my main feeling from the day be what you first see. I plan to add that journaling right to the 4×4 card that had the 9 day on it. I will probably also use a baseball protector pocket letter sleeves to hold more pictures from outside that day.

img_1558The bottom 4×4 card has a snowman and some Evergreen Bough sequins on the card. I wanted a card that was playful like my kids and puppy playing in the snow.

img_1559I of course have the shakers on the side. I really love how they look!!

img_1546

I added a wooden snowflake to the back of the tag. I added some smaller circles in the other circle.

sms-december-9

Keeping my album pages simple and fun is key for me to keep going strong. I so love the end result and looking through all our memories from the month. I really am loving my approach this year and focusing more on recording the moments and journaling. focusing on the words, I know that the stories will come more alive when I add my photos after Christmas.

I hope you are checking out the store this week, there are tons of deals going on right now!! It is still time to grab some stocking stuffers. (The discount code for Dec 14th and the String Shop is 50STRING)

What About Wednesday: Laura’s October Sketch Challenge

13932877_10210738580967273_2143640393516853298_n

Aloha Sparklers!! Autumn is truly here this week. The temperature is a whole whomping 65 and cloudy. It has me craving pumpkin spice coffees, apple cider donuts and toasty warm socks. I also have been itching to starting scrapping all my fall photos. In rich tones with lots of layers.

This week I decided to take on design team member Laura’s sketch challenge. I have been using a ton of sketches this autumn. I think partly because I have been so busy with other stuff like school and housework (the typical mom stuff) that I don’t have as much time to sit and think of ways to get creative on my pages. I need that little jump start to my scrappy mojo to get going.

I love how simple this sketch is because it offers so much in terms of making it mine. I can keep it simple or go all out and make more complicated if I want it that way. I did a little of both.

I started off by using a white card stock background with a title and sub title sketched on using my silhouette sketch pens. I bought a big pack of them when I got my silhouette and never used them.. To be honest I was a little intimidated by them. They seemed so complicated, even though the truth is they are super easy to use. Replace the blade with the sketch pen, pick out a design or font to use, and hit send to silhouette (with sketch pens checked instead of the blade depth) and your silhouette does the work. It looks so cool too!!

img_9868

For the background I used lots of different Autumn colors to create splatters. I watered down acrylic paint, Shimmerz Dazzlerz,  and used some Shimmerz Vibez in Four Leaf Clover green and  Razzle-dazzle Berry. I used my paint brush to let the paint drop off into droplets on the page. I wanted it to have a natural and random feel. I knew where my photo was going to go so I picked places around the center and smaller droplets near the title.

img_9875

I kept my layers simple. I went with rich tones that remind me of Autumn. I put dimensional tape in between the layers to create some shadows.

img_9873

I really love the way this doily gives this layout a feminine feel with all the colors. It adds a softness against the straight lines. I also tied a cute little bow with baker’s twine and hung it across the bottom of the picture.

img_9870

I scattered heart felties and Autumn Joy sequins at bottom of the picture, instead of on the baker twine, like the sketch suggested. I also scattered A Day In The Woods sequins with the Autumn Joy sequins around the layout, mainly in the paint splatters. I added some new Shimelle Go Now Go transparent leave stickers throughout the splatters. I love the way it looks like leaves blowing around off my photo.

img_9866

This is one of my favorite photos I have taken this Autumn season. It is nothing special, I actually snapped this early one morning while I was waiting for the puppy to finish going to the bathroom outside. She is still at that stage where she needs to be watched and make sure she doesn’t play too much. We have this old tree stump, that I stand on so my feet stay dry. The puppy loves to come join me. My comfy slippers help keep my feet warm too. This is my favorite plaid shirt too, it’s flannel and so warm. Perfect for the chilly mornings we have here in Washington. I have missed this special time of the year where sweaters are necessary and the air is crisp. The smell of dry leaves and chimney smoke in the air is so refreshing especially since I have lived in more city areas for about 6 or so years.

I added some old Pink Fresh Studio wood pieces on some feltie clouds. They are perfect for this layout. It adds a fun touch without being really heavy.

img_9872

This Maggie Holmes Gather tag and chip board piece add a cute touch too. The little touch of pink matches the pink collar Kona my puppy is wearing.

img_9874

I drew journaling lines at the bottom of the layout under the title. I journaled away. I really love how it looks with my own handwriting on my layouts. It has this homemade feel to it.

Here is a look at the full layout! I really love how this turned out. It was really fun using this sketch. I definitely think I am going to use this sketch again and tweak a few things to make it a little, because it is so open to do that.

Triple Hop-Day 2

@spiegelmomscraps @jodyspiegelhoff @missywhidden, #spiegelmomscraps #scrapbooking #diy #papercraft

Happy Saturday and welcome back to our Triple Hop weekend!!  Today we have more of the Sparklers DT girls AND three awesome guests ready to inspire you.  Welcome Missy Whidden, Alex Hunter and Karla Yungwirth!! Thank you so much for joining us and sharing your creativity with the SMS fans!

Today is all about SEQUINS and all the creative things you can do with them in your paper crafting.  There is so much more to sequins than just shaker cards and today we want to knock your sparkly socks off, so let’s get started! Here’s today’s sparkly line-up:

It’s Jody here on the SMS blog and I’m totally thrilled!   Today, I’m kicking off Sequin Saturday with this fun layout. I started off by creating my background with Shimmerz Dazzlerz Pucker Up Pink and watering it down with a a few sprays of H2O. I smooshed it around on a plastic Ziplock baggie. I put my hand inside the Ziplock and used my fingers to smoosh & kind of stamp my color onto my American Crafts white cardstock.

Next, I added Pink Paislee branding stripes along the middle to ground everything. Then I added more layers from there, beginning with some black cardstock from my scraps bin. I knew I wanted to pull in black because I already had my title planned out. I added a few messy layers behind my 4×4″ black & white photo and then mounted it all onto the black cardstock, backed with craft foam for some dimension.

In my layout I used my Summer Sunset sequins (which you can pre-order now) to accent the direction & angle at which my girls are “dabbing.” Using sequins to accent movement in a layout really helps your eye move naturally across your layout. Give it a try! Pull out action photos such as a sporting event, children dancing, running, etc. Use the sequins as an extentsion of the energy flowing from your photo or photos.

Another fun thing I did on this layout is add some stamping by pulling stamps from my stash. The “Carefree” stamp is a mystery to me BUT the “#together” stamp is from an American Craft super cute roller date stamp set.

The black die cut heart is from the free SpiegelMom Scraps cut file “Mermaid Hair Don’t Care” found here.

Finally, here’s a close up of the smooshed Pucker Up Pink & water with the Summer Sunset sequins.

Thank you for spending your time with us again today! Next, you’re on to Missy and all the awesomeness on her blog!!

** Remember to comment on all the blogs to win a $10.00 shop credit!

DIY Die Cut background – no Silhouette needed!

@spiegelmomscraps @pinkpasilee @silhouette @jodyspiegelhoff @bigshot @kaiserkraft, #spiegelmomscraps #jodyspiegelhoff #kaiserkraft #scrapbook #pinkpaislee #fancyfree #diy #diecutHello everyone!  Jody is back in the house today!  I’m so excited to be back on the blog today as this month’s guest!!  Last week I put a sneak peak out on Instagram for this layout and mentioned that I was going to talk about creating your own die cut background without using an electronic die cutting machine.  I have a very simple method, which works awesome for me when I’m not able to get on the computer to use my Silhouette.  Our high school aged daughter usually has a ton of homework, which has her on the computer for hours at night.  That’s the same computer which has my Silhouette software on it, which poses a big scrappy challenge at night when I’m ready to create!  So adapt and overcome!

The first thing I did was cut a piece of white American Crafts cardstock down to 6 x 12″, which easily fits through my Big Shot for die cutting.  Next, I chose which metal dies I want to use to create my background, or partial background like I did here.  I laid out a few of my Kaiserkraft stitched circle dies, which are fabulous and on sale now!! I love how they cut!  I also really like that the stitches on the die are actually on the circle that is die cut out from the rest of the card stock or paper.  I kept the Kaiserkraft dies in place with small pieces of washi tape and ran the 6 x 12″ card stock through my Big Shot.  I did two pieces of the 6 x 12″ card stock at the same time since I just cut a piece of 12 x 12″ card stock in half.  When I was first planning out this layout, I wasn’t sure if I was going to place each of the 6 x 12″ pieces side by side to create a full background or what exactly. As you can see, I only used one of the 6 x 12″ sheets and filled in the other side with different pieces of Pink Paislee Fancy Free collection (there are only 3 paper pads left in the shop right now!)

This is a very simple way to create a die cut background with your Big Shot!  If you wanted to put both of the 6 x 12″ pieces of card stock together onto a layout, that would look so awesome!  Just think of all the die cuts you can combine, mix and match!  If you want to see what that looks like, be sure to come back next for another die cut layout!  Here’s some close ups of those lovely die cut circles!  I adhered pieces of Pink Paislee Fancy Free papers behind the circle for a fun effect!  There was also no foam adhesive or craft foam behind this layout. I’m actually shocked that I didn’t use any!

img_8582-1.jpgimg_8581-1.jpg

As usual, I added a bunch of layers behind my photo and a then added some fun felt embellishments (Cloudy Days Felties & teal Felt-Fetti Hearts).  I also used some sweet Spring Blooms sequins upside down to add some sparkle!  Thanks again to DT Sparkler Sarah for the Sequin > faux enamel dots inspiration! I also mixed in some Simple Stories I Am, Bella Blvd stickers & a piece of DIY ephemera cut out from some Heidi Swapp packaging.

img_8580-1.jpg img_8579-1.jpg

Thanks so much for visiting the blog today!! I hope I’ve inspired you to bust out your metal dies & Big Shot to create some die cut backgrounds! Be sure to share them in our 15 Minutes 2 Scrap Facebook. We love to see what you create!

See ya next week. Until then, go be creative!!

June’s Special Guest is….

11

…..SpiegelMom herself!!  Hey everyone, Jody here today and I’m your guest designer this lovely month of June!  I thought it would be fun in preparation for the SpiegelMom Scraps 6 year anniversary month in July to hang out on the blog more this month so you can get to know me better.

So, here’s a little about me!  I’m Jody!  I’m a full time workin’ Mama with a super busy family life and some crazy kiddos!  I’ve been a crafter since I was a little girl and but really dove into this hobby in about 2003.  I went to my first Stampin Up! workshop with my BFF Jenn and was hooked.  From there I quickly fell in love with scrapbooking and never looked back.  I was an independent consultant for Memory Works from 2006 until they closed their doors in 2013.  I was on their Design Team and loved so many things about that company!

In 2010 I started SpiegelMom Scraps and ran my business on Etsy for several years, connecting with so many wonderful crafters all over the world!  From there, I was one of the founders of Clique Kits and fell even more in love with this hobby.  My time were was an amazing journey.  Last February I stepped down as I had to move forward with many things in my family life and SMS. Now, things are busy as ever and I’m looking forward to this summer!

My family will be moving this summer and I’m very excited to get into our new home!  I can’t wait to set up my craft studio, video filming & photography area and the kids craft area!!  Besides my kitchen, that area will be my favorite place in our home!  I’ll give you a tour after it’s done!

Ok my friends, enough about me for today and on with my layout!  Today I’m sharing one of a few layouts I created with the Pink Paislee Fancy Free collection.  I used the pretty ombre teal background as my base and cut a bunch of those beautiful butterflies from The Cut Shoppe!  I’ve really been trying to stretch my papers lately and cut files make it so easy!!  This awesome file is from the Love Everlasting cut file collection, which you can find here. I think my favorite thing about the butterflies is how the cut file compliments the stained glass in my photo.

@pinkpaislee @ameicancrafts @spiegelmomscraps @jodyspiegehoff @shimmerzpaints @thecutshoppe @laceygasper, #spiegelmomscraps #cutfile #thecutshoppe #butterfly #loveeverlasting #hannahkay #glassinebag #sequins shaker #sequins #pinkpaislee #fancyfree

I used this lovely cut file to compliment the entire feel of the photo & layout. Besides that, I wanted to emphasize the word ‘you’ so I painted on some Dazzlerz texture paste in Coral Me Crazy and love how it turned out!

@pinkpaislee @ameicancrafts @spiegelmomscraps @jodyspiegehoff @shimmerzpaints @thecutshoppe @laceygasper, #spiegelmomscraps #cutfile #thecutshoppe #butterfly #loveeverlasting #hannahkay #glassinebag #sequins shaker #sequins #pinkpaislee #fancyfree

Here’s a close up of the glassine bag sequin pocket I created as a photo matte. I love how the glassine bag softens the sequins just enough ❤️

Next up is my layout!  I started with my favorite American Crafts white cardstock and busted out my new Kaisercraft stencil and some Licorice Stick Dazzlerz.  I taped off part of the stencil because I only wanted to use that particular row of arrows with the Dazzlerz texture paste. That stencil is so versatile, I just love it.  Next, I layered up the awesome new Hello Heather papers from Pretty Little Studio.  This paper is just fabulous!  I wanted to keep with the geometric shapes within the papers, so I cut the aqua striped paper into squares, then in half diagonally for some fun triangles.  I also used the fun Icons metal dies from Kasiercraft to make some more fun embellishments out of the Hello Heather papers.  I thought it would be fun to add glue to the middle of two of them and sprinkled the new Aqua Marine Dream sequins inside.  I love how this new mix sparkles!!

One of my new favorite things is the cut and print files from Crafty Jen Schow.  They are fabulous!  She has all kinds to choose from, including some free ones.

Here’s a different look at the layout to show the dimension. I love to used several layers and pop them up with some Scrapbook Adhesives form squares.

Tuesday’s Talent ~ Juliana Michaels

Hello again Spiegelmom Fans! It’s Juliana here from 17turtles and I’m back for my second guest post! Today, I’m sharing another scrapbook page that I created using a fun mix of embellishments from the Spiegelmom Scraps Etsy Shop.

The XOXO wood veneer from the Dear Lizzy Serendipity Wood Veneers jumped out at me as the perfect title for this photo of my sweet puppy Lincoln loving on one of his favorite toys. XOXO_Adorable_Dog_Scrapbook_Page_Spiegel_Mom_Scraps_Guest_Designer_Juliana_Michaels_02I fell in love with the Heart Felt Fetti Die Cuts as soon as I saw them and couldn’t resist adding them and some of the gorgeous Blue Lagoon Sequins to embellish my layout. I really love how this mix of embellishments adds some texture and interest to my layout without a lot of added bulk.
XOXO_Adorable_Dog_Scrapbook_Page_Spiegel_Mom_Scraps_Guest_Designer_Juliana_Michaels_03Thank you for stopping by today and I want to thank Jody so very much for having me as a guest here on Spiegelmom Scraps!

HUGS!
