Shaker Title Page

Good morning!

If you’re reading this then you’ve made it to Wednesday – halfway through the week following a holiday weekend, which is always a struggle for me.

I’ve been having fun lately experimenting with different shaker pockets. I love the layering capabilities! Today I’m sharing a shaker pocket title page made with my trusty fuse tool. Projects like this are much easier if you have a heat proof mat with measurements – so you can get your fusing centered.

I love adding different sized page protectors in Project Life to make it a little more eclectic. I began by trimming my page protector to a 6×12 size. Working first on the rectangular inside pocket holding the “XOXO” I fused 3 sides, added the thicker, and fused the top. The fact that the title I chose was adhesive helped hold it in place. But if you’re going for a more whimsical look you could just add any cut file (or any ephemera for that matter!) I then added the sequins to the page protector. I chose to use Strawberry Bubblegum – a perfect mix for spring! I think lighter sequins look best when layered over a layout – you could also try these or these. Lastly, I used my mini stapler to attach a white heart feltie and my shaker page was complete! SO easy.

I wanted to keep the layout underneath fairly simple so both would be highlighted and not too busy. I used papers from Felicity Jane Studio and coordinating ephemera. I used a few embellishments from my stash including a white lace doily  and cork heart from the shop.

Notice that little bit of shine underneath my photo? You can brush on some Shimmerz  Paste-eez like this one for a little bit of bling.

I love putting my finished spreads in my album to admire how they turned out! I hope you’re inspired to do a little experimenting with shaker pockets

Tackling a moodboard with Laura

Hi Guys, Laura here for my first post of the year.

Have you seen our January challenge over in 15 Minutes to Scrap?  It has been set by our lovely Hannah and it is to use this mood board as inspiration.  Hannah also asks us to pay particular attention to textures and use one of the textures displayed in the mood board.

When I start scrapping based on a mood board the first thing I notice are the colours.  I adore these colours – rich teals, metallics and greys are what stand out to me most.  However, you could also run with duck egg, wood, and white with a pop of mustard.

Next, I notice the finishes – wood grain, velvet, hammered metal and – my favourite – woollen pompoms.  Seeing as Hannah specified texture I thought I would attempt to make some mini pompoms for my layout.  After five attempts I came up with something usable and gathered some other supplies…

I knew I wanted to make a segmented sequin shaker pocket from vellum.  My vellum has a slightly grey tinge to it which I thought matched the mood board colour scheme perfectly.

I pulled out my sewing machine and the darkest teal shade of thread I had and made a film strip style pocket stuffed with aqua marine dream sequins.

I started working on a mixed media background combining metallic washi tapes and inks.  The trouble was I couldn’t make it work as a big piece…

No problem, though – it had all the right colours and textures to work with the theme it was just too big.  The solution was to cut it down into smaller pieces.  I plumped for the star shape as it matched both the photo and the sequins.

As I worked with my ingredients and referred back to the mood board I was inspired to go for a segmented look… the board has 9 boxes, but also looking at the middle column you have window panes, rectangles of colours in the swatch and geometric areas of colour in the art work.

This also gave me the opportunity to add copper pen work.

I added the writing after everything else was finished.  I always forget how nerve-wracking it is writing directly onto a layout!!  My tip is to sketch it out very lightly in pencil and wait over night for the ink to dry before erasing the lines.  Also write confidently (I find going too slowly makes me more likely to wobble) and move your  wrist along the paper (if my wrist is not comfortable the writing won’t be fluent.)

I’m so pleased with the texture the pompoms give.  I’m not sure how this will work in an album – it might be one for a box frame.

Thanks for stopping by.  I hope you’ll join us over on the facebook group for Hannahs challenge.

Creating Sequin Shaker Pockets

Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone!  Today I’m bringing back a little tutorial that I did a few years ago and still LOVE it!  Below I have several step by step pictures on how I create some of my sequin shaker pockets.  It’s super easy and fun!  These little shaker pockets add a very fun element to you scrapbook pages, mini albums, Project Life and cards.  Here’s what I started with.  Pictured:  Aleene’s Tackey Glue, mini glassine bag, Gold Garland Confetti Sequins and Fairytale Sequins

@spiegelmomscraps @jodyspiegelhoff

In the photo gallery below, you can click on each photo to enlarge it.  When you do, you’ll see that I turned my mini glassine bag upside down and cut the back open with one cut down the middle and two small cuts going towards the edges (by not all the way).  Then, I randomly spread some Aleene’s Tacky glue along the inside and sprinkled one of my favorite sequins mixes, Fairytale!!  Then, I put some glue along the top of the glassine on the inside so no sequins could sneak out then closed the back of the bag and taped it shut.  Easy peasy!!

After creating this sequin shaker pocket I created this layout!  I used the fabulous Heidi Swapp line, Hello Today.  I have the full 12×12″ paper pad and love every single sheet!  I used the yellow paper with dots as my background, then trimmed down the star paper to 11×11″.  Since I already created a few things with this line, I had several decent sized pieces of patterned papers already cut so I used those to begin layering.

I added some fun pink doilies from Michael’s Arts and Crafts store, Maggie Holmes gold glitter Thickers, some stickers from Allison Kreft & Amy Tangerine and a few other little odds and ends 🙂                          And here are two sizes of the glassine bags I have in my shop!  These are by far the most popular for making my sequin shaker pockets, little treat bags, embellishment holders and more!  Last Christmas I even made an Advent Calendar!

Thank you for spending your time with me today!  I hope you’ll be creating some sequin shaker pockets of your own!   Here are a few links to help get you started today!  You can check out a fun YouTube video from my channel which shows you how I’ve created them in the past with confetti.
