What About Wednesday: Changing a Sketch

Aloha!! I don’t know about you but I am very much enjoying all the layouts this month with our Team Up with Let’s Get Sketchy. It is so fun seeing everyone’s take on the same sketches throughout the week. I really liked using this sketch this week.
week-3

I love the concept of this sketch. It was designed by Brenshevia, from Let’s Get Sketchy.  It uses strips of paper under the photo. I like to do this often. It’s a great way to use up smaller scraps that I have in my stash.

I did have to make one switch to this sketch. Which is what I wanted to discuss a little today. Changing a sketch to fit our design needs.

I have two photos that I wanted to use for this layout. I am still working on my Autumn cozy themed photos. I did, however decide to keep this layout a 12×12 instead of the 8 1/2x 11 that I have been doing though out this past month.

By adding a second photo it does change the flow design in the sketch. It leaves much less white space. When you adapt a sketch to fit our needs, you do want to think of whether these changes will work with the concept of the sketch and still function for you.

Does this change effect how you are telling the story that is on your page?  I seriously think these types of questions really are different for each and every scrapper.  Sometimes it is fine to change up a sketch, like I did. Sometimes it may not work. If I had wanted to journal more about  my love for Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes or other seasonal Starbucks drinks I probably wouldn’t want to add a second photo.

Because I used two photos I also needed more strips of paper under the photos. I wanted to use more Silhouette Cut leaves, since many of my cozy layouts have leaves on them. This proved to be difficult. I ultimately decided to use them in two spots. On the right side of my strips and photo and down near the bottom of the photos where the end of my Title would be.

Even though there isn’t spots for big cluster embellishments on the sketch, I really wanted them, because it is part of my style. I layered leaves with stickers, a rubber tag, gold thread, cork stars and sequins. I love all the texture ll these different elements add to the layers.

I did the same thing with my bottom clusters as well. I added some Thickers on the leaf cluster to draw your eye right there. There are some extra enamel dots among the cork stars and Sequins (I used Autumn Joy and Razzleberry mixes). I loved the sentiment on ephemera piece from the Maggie Holmes Gather collection.

The rest of the title I placed on the top of the photos. (This was one of the things I changed.) I thought it helped tie the top left hand cluster to the rest of the layout. Especially since it all was connected somehow.

I used bigger fonts for the words that I really wanted focus on. Having them gold is just a plus too.

I also added a couple of strips that I ripped to put in the cluster. I like the way that ties with all the strips under the photos. Adding bits with gold and a sticker leaf, helps coordinate with the other clusters.

Whenever I change up a sketch I always try to keep the integrity of the sketch. Also making the sketch me is important to me as a scrapbooker. Not everyone needs or wants to do that. That is the awesome thing about scrapbooking and using sketches. We have the freedom to change them to fit our needs or just use as is. img_0919

I hope you are sharing on Social Media how you are using these sketches!! Tag us @LGSketchy and @SpiegelMomScraps. Seeing your work helps inspire us too!! Also don’t forget to head over to our Facebook Group and join in our monthly challenge. (This month the challenge is to use a big Title)

Here is one last look at my finished layout. I hope it inspires you to change up a sketch you are using!!

What About Wednesday: Pumpkin Soup

13932877_10210738580967273_2143640393516853298_n

Aloha Sparklers!! I have been a little obsessed with documenting the autumn this year. I am pretty sure it is because of the newness that it is. After having spent 6 years in warm places, or mostly warm throughout the year, Autumn was not really noticeable. I would always look for things that reminded me of back home, but really it never felt like Autumn. So I am loving this weather for now, even though I know it may be a whole new story I am telling next year.

One of the things I love about this time of the year, especially if you live in a place where the season changes are very noticeable, is the food changes that come with the weather changes. Have I mentioned that I went to culinary school in college?! I love food, and how it brings my family together.

When it starts getting chilly, the best thing is a nice bowl of warm goodness. It helps heat your insides and makes you feel all comfy and cozy. One of my favorite things to make in the Autumn is Pumpkin Soup. In my mind it isn’t Autumn until I make Pumkpin Soup. (Even when I made this in Hawaii it still lacked that true feeling that the chilly weather brings to this soup.)

This every year tradition started when I was a teenager. My mom found this great soup, and now we just know it by heart. The best recipes are the ones that you have memorized because you make it so much . This is why I wanted to make this layout and what will be a new album. I want to have an album where I can put all these recipes and things that I love about this season of the year, the things that help make it cozy and warm. The things that we do every year, and could easily forget where those traditions come from if I don’t document it now.

I plan to include recipe and ephemera to this album to give it that homey feel. That old scrapbook feel. My hope is to add silhouette cut leaves, a shipping tag and a journaling card from Simple Stories Reset Girl Collection. Then sprinkle in some sequins (Falling Leaves Sequin mix) and it will be perfect.

I used some cork stars and a doily to help tie in the rustic look. The thread adds some texture amount my layers of cut leaves from scraps of old patterned paper. This apple wood button from Shimelle’s collection Go Now Go reminds me of the apple relish I put on my Pumpkin Soup.

These journaling cards add such a cool touch.
