Scrapbooking with Karla – Scraplifting Jenn Gagne!

Happy Thursday!! Karla back today with a scrappy springtime layout. This week we are scraplifting our awesome Guest Designer Jenn Gagne. Be sure to check out Tuesday’s blog post where she shared an amazing traveler’s notebook project! I’ve decided to use her beautiful Easter layout as inspiration for my scrapbook project today. I just loved the pretty colours and those gorgeous doilies, and I knew this would be a perfect layout to add the On Pointe, Aquarius, Morning Glow and Painted Gardens Sequin Mixes! Here’s a look at Jenn’s layout:

Layout by Jenn Gagne

I picked up a lovely PhotoPlay collection over the weekend and I couldn’t wait to use the springtime papers included. I’m really impressed with the PhotoPlay papers I’m seeing! I started off by adding Distress Oxide Inks to my splat mat and spritzing with Tattered Angels Iridescent Gold Mist. I put the white doilies directly onto the inky mist and pulled them through it to add some shimmery watercolour. I used 3 different colours for the doilies and then dried them with a heat gun.

I used the same inky mists to add some watercolours and splats directly to my white cardstock background before laying down the doilies and then adding my photo matted with the pretty PhotoPlay papers.

I stamped some butterflies, words and scrolls on the background with Distress Oxide Inks and then added some flowers, gems and more butterflies popped up with foam dots to give the layout some more dimension. Then, of course, the fun part – adding the sequins!! This just makes the layout come alive!

Here’s a look at all the beautiful sequins I used today – On Pointe, Aquarius, Morning Glow and Painted Gardens! I loved how all these gorgeous colours worked with this pretty springtime layout <3

Scraplift Sunday with Crafty Meggy

Hello fellow SMS fans!! I hope you’re having a wonderful Sunday! I am so excited about this layout so I will just jump right in!!

I saw a recent layout by Victoria Marie on youtube and knew immediately that I just HAD to scraplift it! Don’t you just love all the inspiration we have these days between all the different social media we are a part of?!!!

Here is the layout that Victoria made:

Isn’t it just GORGEOUS?!!! I just love the simplicity of it! My layout didn’t turn out quite so simple, but I am in love with it!!

I decided to print off this photo of my newest nephew and me that my sister took last week when they came to visit. That is the thing I love about having my Canon Selphy, I can print out photos and use them immediately.

I made 3 clusters on this layout. Each one of them has Love you Tons Felties, Wolf Gery Heart Felties, Amy’s Sprinkles and Gun Metal Grey sequin mixes (Both of these mixes are sold out and being retired so they’re no longer available. Sorry about that!! BUT, you can find the other amazing sequin mixes here!)

I had a hard time finding a font in the right color that worked with the layout. In the end I went with this one and I love it!!

I used a Silver Foil Holiday Doily in a couple places on the layout. I really love how the silver stands out again the white textured American Crafts cardstock and that black polka dot paper.

And lawst but not least, I used the good old packaging technique on the background with a few Shimmerz paints, Well Blue Me Down Colorings, Before Dawn Vibez and No Yolking Coloringz.

Here’s my process video you can watch if you’d like a closer look at how I made the layout:

Thanks so much for stopping by today! Be sure to come by the shop and check out all the amazing products that Jody has! When you make a purchase you can use my code, Megan15, for 15% off your entire order!

Hello there!  It’s Laura here today sharing my take on the Facebook challenge for October.

Here is the sketch I designed:

@spieglemomscraps #spiegelmomscraps #sequins #scrapbooksketch

And this is my take on it:

@spiegelmomscraps @maggieholmes @cratepaper #spiegelmomscraps #maggieholmes #cratepaper

I stayed quite true to the sketch.  The supplies are from Maggie Holmes’ Gather, and SpiegleMom Scraps of course!

@spieglemomscraps @maggieholmes @cratepaper #spiegelmomscraps #maggieholmes #cratepaper #sequins

I’ve used sequins from Mint Chip and Believe In You.  I’ve used a couple of doilies too, one coloured up with ink sprays.

@spieglemomscraps @maggieholmes @cratepaper #spiegelmomscraps #maggieholmes #cratepaper #sequins

I love the effect of the strung sequins wrapped around the frame.  This is something I want to expand on in a future layout!

@spieglemomscraps @maggieholmes @cratepaper #spiegelmomscraps #maggieholmes #cratepaper #sequins

You can watch the process too…

Thanks for joining me today!

What about Wednesday: Using Heritage Photos

13932877_10210738580967273_2143640393516853298_n

Aloha, It’s Hannah with you today! It’s Hump day and I think we all love the idea of the weekend. It will be on it’s way I promise, just a few more days to get through!img_9389

Lately, as we transition from summer to autumn. Get back into school time routines. I Have been finding that my ability to create easily has been difficult. I know we all go through these times, when life around us is crazy and filled with chaos and that causes our crafty mojo (as many of us call it) to be effected.

I have been trying to find little things to help this transition be fast because I love to scrap. The worst feeling is wanting and having time to sit down at your scrap desk and then sit there at your paper and having no idea what you want to do on the page. We all go through this, but there has to be ways to make these periods to be smaller, shorter and that we still end up creating something we love.

When I started this layout, the first thing I did was changed up my size. I cut down my white card stock to 8 1/2 by 11. This size just isn’t as intimidating. The space is less and there is less room to mess up on.

Another thing I like to do is pick a photo of a story I have been meaning to tell. I have a list in my crafting notebook of stories I want to scrapbook. When I am having a hard time finding focus, I pick out one of those. I find having a story to focus on allows me to let go of having a perfect design. I can pick a paper with space for writing. A really nice ledger. Then I just focus on an even smaller amount of space, leaving room for my journaling. img_9397

I love this old photo I have of my grandmother when she was little. Even though her clothes are worn, she always looked darling and had her hair done nicely and cute. I have been waiting to scrap this photo of her for a while. This photo has been sitting in my photo pile waiting for me to tell it’s story.

Another tip I would give, is to not feel bad about doing something you love to do on your layout. We all have things we love to do that are our go to or our signature technique on the layouts we do. There are many times when I purposely try not to do them because I want to try something different or unique. That’s how I grow by trying new things. But when I am in a scrappy rut I like to go back and do them.

Lately I have been loving doilies. It’s odd because I own really only a few of them. I just haven’t had the desire to go out and buy many of them. I think other scrapbookers make them look so amazing, but I often hate what they look like when I use them. For some odd reason though, I just have the need to use doilies on almost every layout. This time I grabbed another doily and layered away on it.

img_9392

The cut file with XO’s and hearts was perfect. There was lots of openings for the doily and my embellishments to peek through. I picked an acetate and vellum piece so that it gave a light look. I layered the cork-fetti hearts and the Happy Dance sequin mix around the cut file and around the doily. I love the girlie feel this embellishment cluster feels.

img_9391

Another thing that I like to do when I am in a slump, I use sketches. I used the newest Citrus Twist Sketch.

sunday-sketch-18-9-16

Using a sketch takes the pressure off of having to come up with the design of a layout. Lately I have been using a lot of sketches. I really love taking a sketch and then putting my own twist on it too. You will notice for this layout I overlapped the two patterned papers from the sides. I put the ledger paper over a light patterned paper. I made sure they were different sizes so they created some hard edges.

The doily is in place of the banner in the sketch and I extended more embellishing and extra journaling up the side of the photo. This worked really well because I only had one photo and it isn’t a big photo.

img_9396

This Maggie Holmes Open Book ephemera piece is perfect for adding just a little extra to the layout.

I did my classic layering behind the photo. I used a fun washi plus sign patterned paper.

img_9395

I choose similar colors that weren’t too bold to layer in. This way you are drawn to the picture and story.

I used a tag above the photo with some white twine. The twine looks so cute to the cork-fetti  heart. I tucked some more ephemera in the papers. Then I sprinkled sequins around making it looked scattered.

The puffy sticker on the photo helps draw your eye back to the photo. The gold mist splatters help finish off the layout.

img_9394

What are some things do you do when you feel a little out of the scrappy loop? I love that by listening what others do to stay inspired to create helps me become more inspired to create on my own!!

I hope you crafty friends have a great rest of the week. Don’t forget to stop by our Facebook Group 15 Minutes to Scrap, to find more inspiration and check out our challenge this month. We love to connect with you and help inspire you to create something beautiful!!

Have an inspired Week,

What About Wednesday: Starting a New Kit

13932877_10210738580967273_2143640393516853298_n

Hello!! It is Hannah here with you today!!

img_9227

Do you ever get a new kit in the mail and it looks far to pretty to cut into? Or do you ever sit with your kit on your craft table and wonder what parts of that kit you should use first? Well today I am going to talk a little bit about my process for starting a new kit.

Here is a Youtube video of me talking through opening a new (June) Clique Kit that I haven’t used yet because it was just so pretty.

My first real tip for being able to dig right into a kit when you get it, and this is really a mind over matter issue. Just think of it like any old paper or layout you are starting. When I stop overthinking about a kit, it usually is easier for me to jump right into using my kit.

My next tip, is to start with my photo. By picking my photo and using that as the starting point, I can tailor my layout to match the feel I am going for.

Knowing the design can also help digging into my kit. If I know I want to make a L shaped design or a grid design. I can pick papers that help me achieve that design concept. Some of the papers in my kit may not work with the design I want and that makes it easier to pick papers.

Also what about just using your favorite paper or embellishments to start making your layout. If you pick out your favorite parts of the kit and then add pieces from the kit that work well with those pieces then you will have a layout that you love because you love the elements on the layout.  Using the pieces I love always gets me excited about scrapbooking and then I tend to like my layouts more too.

Lastly I want to mention that if you have a routine for starting a layout, this could also be helpful. Are there certain things you notice you do when you are successful in producing a layout or project in a timely minor for you? I notice for me(also realize this is different and unique to each scrapper), that I feel successful in my scrap room when I stick to a scrappy routine. Making sure I am not overwhelmed with inspiration online is the first thing. If earlier in the day I picked out my starting point definitely helps me. I then put on some music and pick a photo from my photo pile and get to town. I look through the kit and pick out things that jump out to me as matching the feel of the photo(s) I choose.

I try to think about my stash and think if I have anything in there that matches my photo or feel I am trying to accomplish on my layout. i try not to spend too long looking around for things and just kinda go with my gut. When I am successful, I find that I am taking about an hour to create a layout from start to finish. Using and sticking to my kit helps. Also making decisions without stewing over them is what I try to achieve.

It I start each layout or project the same way I get into the habit of making better instinctual decisions on my layouts. And I tend to love them better.

Let’s take a look at the layout I made with my newer June Clique kit that I hadn’t used yet.

homamade-latte

I picked My photos first, I knew I wanted to make a layout about the new coffee maker we bought right after we moved into our new house. We had to wait another week to get our household goods, so a coffee maker would be needed to make it through the week. This new one we found, had a container to put milk into. Then you microwave it, and pump to add air to make foam. I can now have homemade lattes right at home. This literally makes my soul sing!!

Because I knew what story and photos I wanted to tell, I took from my stash some stickers and die cuts from Pretty Little Studio about coffee. I also had an old coffee cup clip from a past Clique kit.

I also took this time to pull out some grey and blue feltie hearts from the SpiegelMom Scraps Store. I knew they would be perfect because my coffee cups all had blue and grey tones in them.

img_9234

The kit I used had tons of cute Elle’s Studio stuff in it. Using a kit really helps keep things coordinated. This helps making a layout a little faster for me. I take less time figuring out things that all match or work well together. And this kit’s main colors worked perfectly with the color scheme I wanted to use.

I instantly picked out this Clique exclusive because the saying went with the feel I was going for. It’s the little things of life that makes life better. I backed the patterned paper with white card stock from the Store to add texture without being really heavy.

img_9235

I backed each of my photos with a white doily. I wanted lots of layers but didn’t want to add a lot bulk. The doilies are good for that. I also used some vellum and tissue paper behind my photos.

img_9242

The clear acetate pieces mixed with the SpiegelMom Scraps exclusive mix for the kit and the new Mocha Mint Dreams sequin mix add light layered embellishments to the layout without feeling really heavy.

img_9232

I love how these sequins look like steam coming from my cup!!

img_9237

Those blue feltie hearts in a row, add something fun tucked in the layers of the tissue paper and add a shelf for the script font on the background paper.

img_9230

I also love the pops of pink throughout the layout.

img_9245

I may have ran out of room for my journaling!!

img_9246

The way I clustered my photos and journaling card, make the best use of this diagonal design on the background paper. It is really fun and different from the designs I usually use on my page. It stumped me at first, I won’t lie. I took about thirty minutes working on the placement of the photos before I was happy with how it looked. Once I was happy with the way they looked the rest of the layout came together really fast.

I hope I gave you a few good tips for starting a new kit. Also know that there is no right way to dig into your kits. As long as you are happy with your process, it is the right way!!

Have an inspired Wednesday!!

Hello Mini Cards

Hello Mini Cards SMS1

Hello…

Ka here to wish you a Happy Hump Day and share some mini Hello cards with you. It’s always nice to have some Hello cards on hand for a quick note to wish your friends a happy day or simply just to say Hello! I love these smaller size cards because I find it incredibly useful to just stamp a tiny encouraging sentiment or write a small note or add an inspiring quote to brighten someone’s day. I love to make and have a stash of these on hand for those last minute occasion!

Hello Mini Cards SMS2

For all the cards, I inked up the flower stamp from the Neat and Tangled Hand Stitched stamp set with Memento Tuxedo Black ink. After that I colored in the images with Copic Markers and added a coat of shimmer with the Wink of Stella Glitter Brush Marker Pen. Once I finished coloring in the images, I cut them out and assembled everything together on the card bases with some yellow thread and sequins. The sentiments are from the Altenew Label Love stamp set.

Hello Mini Cards SMS3

For the bags, I folded some White Lace Paper Doilies over some glassine bags and tied some yellow bakers twine over it. I added Pink and White Felt-Fetti Heart Die Cuts as a last finishing touch.

Holiday Mini cards Details 3

I hope you’ve enjoyed this daily dose of inspiration and hopefully you will create some mini cards to have on hand for those last minute occasion. Don’t forget to head over to the SpiegelMom Scraps Shop to pick up some of these supplies to make your own mini cards too!

Pocket Pal Letter with GD Renee Joy!

Hi there, scrappy friends… I hope your week is off to a good start. This week I thought I would do something a bit different.  I thought it would be fun to create a pocket letter.  It’s kind of like pocket page scrapbooking and a letter all in one.  Big thanks to Heidi Swapp and Janette Lane for their page inspiration. I bet some of you have already tried it.  I am liking it a lot and can’t wait to do more.  Let me share this one with you!

IMG_5076 SMS GD Cropped Image 1

I really had a good time selecting paper and embellishments for this project. SpiegelMom Scraps was just perfect for this!! I know that you will love these goodies just as much as I do!! Since this pocket letter is being given to someone really special, I wanted to describe her in the best way I could. I think this pic is a good start….love those doilies!!

IMG_5009 cropped Image 2

Oh, by the way, I am giving this letter to my daughter. She has seen the layout; so far, she does not suspect a thing. Here’s hoping I can pull this off 😉  I hid a little note in the doily that you see in the middle below. I just had to remember not to glue it shut 🙂

IMG_5008 cropped Image 3

I loved how the words on the paper fit perfectly for my daughter. This next photo does just that and gave me a chance to to leave a little sentiment, too!

IMG_5019 corrected Image 4

I thought it would be cool to share some of my goodies with her so I created a pocket from a tag….I filled it with hearts and stars; then, I sealed it with washi tape so nothing would spill out. Yes, I stuffed it! Oh, if it looks like there is a bit too much washi on the tag that’s because I wanted to share. That is what I love about washi tape….it lifts right off! It comes in really handy when you want to keep your sequins and confetti in the pockets, too. Washi creates a great seal.

IMG_5084 cropped Image 5

When you are ready to send off your pocket letter, it will fit nicely inside of a regular legal size envelope unless you stuffed it like I did. You can also put goodies in the pockets, too 🙂

Here are the goodies I enjoyed using:

Paper-Heidi Swapp and Craft Smith
Black Sequins
Gold Confetti
Silver Confetti
Doilies
Washi Tape
Hearts
Tag
Stars

It is so much fun visiting SpiegelMom Scraps. Thank you again, Jody!!

Have a great week everyone. ‘See you next week 🙂

Happy Scrapping,

Renee Joy
