Creative Cards with Karla – Crazy Bird Christmas!

Hi! It’s Karla back today for a Creative Card feature. This month our theme is winter and tools – fun!! Of course, with Christmas around the corner, I wanted to get a few more Christmas cards made, so I pulled out my Cuttlebug, dies and stamps and three of the new sequin mixes from the SpiegelMom Scraps Store – Birthdays and Balloons, Happy Happy Winter and Puppy Dog Tails! I really love how the bright colours that I chose from these mixes look so fun and festive.

These crazy birds just make me laugh everytime I see them, and I’m sure that whoever I give this card to will share a smile. I used a Pretty Pink Posh die and my Cuttlebug to diecut this neat scalloped square before watercolouring my little guy and adding a cute little Santa hat.

Inside, I stamped a sentiment from the Tim Holtz Crazy Bird Sentiment stamp set and used some bright, fun sequins for a pop of colour.

What about Wednesday: Christmas Card Making

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!! Christmas is almost here!! Are you ready?! I hope the holiday spirit is going strong in your lives.

This year instead of sending out ¬†remade cards (which is what I mostly have done) I decided I would make cards to send out to family and friends. I forgot just how slow I am at making cards. Honestly though it’s because I like a little bit of a special touch on each one. It has been fun though punching and citing out circles with stamped out holiday themed items.

I thought today I would inspire you today with a couple of the cards I made. I had been using a card I made last year as a template to help make the process faster. Though I will admit I have been switching it up on each card so I am not really sure it is way faster.

I used a few different Christmas colors as the back. I used the standard 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 size, I really like this size, because I can fold it two different ways for a different look.

Here is a look at what I made. (Then I will talk a little about what I did to make them special.)

peace-and-joy-sms-cardI used a scallop punch for circles on alternating sides of the card. The holly berry paper is really subtle so it makes for a great back ground paper. It’s so festive too.

I won’t lie though, I struggled a little. Most of my stamps are holiday inspired but don’t overly scream Christmas. Look at that holly berry stamp. It fits perfectly in the inch circle punch. ¬†It felt a little superficial to me, so I paired it with this Christmas Tree cut file with the word Joy in it.

Joy is all what Christmas is about. I wanted to make sure what I am sending out to family and friends is a piece of that Joy.

I put the Joy tree on foam dimensional so it stands out. I really like the way the word Joy adds shadows on the background. I then added a green sequin from the Holly Berries sequin pack in the Spiegelmom Scraps Store.

Really Simple but super cute. I am really digging the green and aqua color combo in the Christmas lines.

Here is another card I made using that same first card as inspiration. Which another thing I wanted to mention. Don’t be afraid to use old cards you have made in the past as inspiration to help make cards. Using a great design over and over with different patterns and embellishments can really make it look like a different type of card.

For this card I only used one scalloped circle instead of two. I added an extra tree to help fill up some of the empty space. I also made sure the pattern in the scalloped circle matches the theme of the cut file trees (These tree cut files are from Hip Kit Club).  I added some more foam dimension to the Joy tree.

I also added some foam dimension to the small holly berry stamped circle.

I made sure I added colored card stock bordering Noel. I wanted it to stand out against the red patterned paper. I put the Holly Berry sequins around the trees to make them stand out.

I love sending cards to people that I love and care about. I love spreading that Christmas Joy and Spirit. Which is why I love to take the time to make something homemade for others. I hope this inspires you to take some time out of your busy schedules to share your love to those you care about.

Tuesday’s Talent | Sarah McClellan’s Holiday Goody Bags

Hello again SpiegelMom Scraps fans! ¬†It’s Sarah again, on the blog, for my final project for November. As I said last week, I made something Christmassy! ¬†I geared up and got in the Christmas mood last Wednesday when I made my test Christmas card and shared it on Facebook and Instagram. @spiegelmomscraps @jodyspiegelhoff @sarahmcclellan @heidiswapp @americancrafts, #scrapbook #card #holiday #christmas #DIY #goodbag #shakercard #sequins #spiegelmomscraps #heidiswapp #christmas #poppinpinksnowflakes #goldgarlandsequins #gold ¬†Here is the card I made! ¬†I used cards, envelopes, and ephemera from the new Heidi Swapp line from Joann’s called Oh What Fun. ¬†I used a 4″ Gold Foil Doily and Gold Garland Confetti from SpiegelMom Scrap Shop. ¬†Heidi even “liked” it on Instagram and commented on it! ¬†Very exciting! Continuing in the Christmas spirit, I have three different Christmas projects to share with you today!sarah 9First is a vellum goodie bag from Cosmo Cricket. ¬†I sealed the bag shut with a 4″ Gold Foil Doily. Then I made a 3×4 shaker pocket with an old pocket photo sheet protector and filled it with Poppin’ Pink Flurries, Gold Garland Confetti, and a few 1/4″ gold sequins from my stash. ¬†I added a couple of the soon-to-be-in-the-shop Birds Of A Feather white felt feathers. Then I layered on a gold foil snowflake, a Basic Grey Juniper Berry kraft tag, and the “believe” die cut from the Oh What Fun Heidi Swapp collection.sarah 10

¬†Here is a close up of the goodie bag for more detail. ¬†I also added a wood veneer snowflake on top from Michael’s and a few wood veneer stars from Studio Calico in the shaker pocket.sarah 11Here is goodie bag number two! ¬†This time it is a kraft colored bag also from Cosmo Cricket. ¬†I embellished it in the same way as the first, making a 3×4 sequin pocket and piling on the ephemera. This time I used another soon-to-be-in-the-shop sequin mix called Christmas Wishes.sarah goodie bag close up
Here is a close up of the goodie bag.   I also tucked a few wood veneer stars from Studio Calico in the shaker pocket.   Such a fun way to use a sequin mix!  The new Heidi Swapp collection is such a great match for the new sequin mixes in the shop!sarah 12

My last item is a gift tag. ¬†I once again used the Heidi Swapp Oh What Fun collection. ¬†The foundation of the tag is a 4×6 sequin pocket that I made using the same technique as in the goodie bags. ¬†I filled it with the new Holiday Happiness mix which will be in the shop very soon! ¬† On top I added a gold foil frame from my stash. ¬†I also used a Queen & Co. chipboard star and punched a 2″ gold glitter circle for layering. ¬†I tucked in a beautiful Birds Of A Feather white felt feather and added tiny letter stickers from Crate Paper After Dark.¬†

I have had so much fun this month creating projects for SpiegelMomScrapShop!  A BIG thank you to Jody for asking me to be her guest designer for November!  I had never done anything like this before and it has been an exciting leaning experience for me!  I look forward to joining the big SpiegelMomScraps blog hop on December 1st!  See you then!

Days 20 & 23 of CARDS!

30 Days 30 cards

Well, it’s Deer Hunters Widows Weekend in our home and the winds are really howling here in Southeastern Wisconsin!¬†¬† As much as this sappy girl misses her hubby this weekend, I love all this girl time with our daughters.¬† Yesterday we made enchiladas together they did nearly all the work!¬† Then we ate dinner, watched Barbie and the Pink Shoes & they stayed up past their bedtime while I helped a friend put together a fabulous Close To My Heart canvas kit together.¬† Day 1 = perfection!

Day 2 of my vacation and it’s time for more holiday cards.¬† Here is the fabulous sketch for Day 20 and it’s rocked out by Kelly Holbrook on the Memory Works blog HERE.

nov20

Here’s my take on this card.¬† I used Fancy Pants Merry Little Christmas 6×6 pad, kraft cardstock and both natural and red May Arts burlap string from my Etsy Shop.

Jody 149

I added some embossing to the green cardstock and love the oomph it adds behind the chipboard sticker elements.  That combined with some foam adhesive and bling made this card very easy to create!

Day 23’s sketch, with Gia really “Glitz”ed up on the Memory Works blog TODAY.

cards23

And my card!!  I really love how you can decorate each of the three smaller elements on the card to almost reate a mini scrapbook layout.. so cool!  I used my EK Success edge paper punches to create the notebook edge and the small scalloped edged square.  Then I inked the edges to make them stand out a little more since my background was light.

Jody 145

¬†Here’s a closer view of my mini elements on¬†my card.¬† I adorned the little “layouts” with red and white baker’s wine, wood veneer, bling and cardstock stickers to finish it off.¬† Again this was a very easy card to put together with the sketch!

Jody 146

Thank you for hanging out with me today!  See you in a day or two with more cards and a Heidi Swapp blog share follow up layout!

Do something creative today!
