Scrappy Friday – Missy Whidden Scraplift

Hello Creatives!

Here I am with the 4th Scrappy friday of the month. I usually only do 3, but because the challenges were so fun, and the fact that I am on holidays, here I am for a fourth one!!!

But, to be perfectly honest, the truth is…. How could I miss the opportunity to scraplift a scrapper I totally admire?

As you probably know, the challenge is to scraplift Missy Whidden this week!

Here is the page I’ve chosen :

What I particularly liked in this page is the background, made of different paper strips, the different layers, the frames, the embellishments and the different words and phrases. Well, I confess…I like every single bits of that page LOL!

What I knew from the beginning to be impossible for me was to add some stitching to the page, as you probably know by now, I’m totally hopeless at it!

However, I’ve come up with a page which is quite different from the original, but which includes the elements I’ve listed above:

Instead of using strips of paper, I used some washi tape strips. and I framed my pic’. I also tried to add some volume and layers, as well as some embellishments (paper clips, perspextives, flairs and Spiegelmom Scraps felt and cork stars and clouds)

I then added some words and phrases, using either stickers or stamps.

It was such a pleasure to scraplift such a talented scrapper! Have YOU tried to play along with us this week?

See you next Friday for another Scrappy Friday!

Christine

Sketch it out Saturday-Rad Dude

Good morning everyone!! Sarah here this morning to share with you a new layout I made using some pretty sequins and awesome little corkys!

Here is the sketch I used for this layout, this is another old one I had drawn up, hope you like playing with it!

This month were sticking in with the theme of the 80’s & 90’s. So today I using my title to go along with the theme. Thus the Rad Dude! lol.

When we were kids we use to say Rad all the time, lol, I feel like I’m making myself sound old lol. But I was a kid in the 90’s and I use to love saying rad!

I grabbed my Crate paper, Cool kid collection, (its been sitting in my stash and I haven’t touched it yet, well untf my layout I started layering behind my photo. And then it was to my Silhouette I went. I cut out my title and some fun little star circles and a line of them to layer around.il now!) Then I grabbed some Bazzil cardstock from the Spiegelmom store and started cutting away at my papers. I knew I wanted to fallow the layout pretty close or possibly to a T. So I chose my paper for the bottom and cut it down, and decided I wanted the top strip to be the same, so I cut that down too and put them in place.

I did all my cut-files on white cardstock too, so that I could water color them like I did my title or back them with colorful and patterned papers. With my title I sprayed it down with water and grabbed my water color pallet and started adding black watercolor to the letters. I sprayed it here and there and dabbed it to get the effect I wanted, a little wore look.

I put my title where I wanted it, to the right of the photo and started playing with the embellishments! I started layering some of the cardstock stickers, tags and my cut-files. I got some great washi from the shop too, He Zhi Color tape. I added a strip of that in a orange-red color and then added a cardstock sticker over it.

And then it was for Sequins and Cork!!! I love these colors and the texture that the sequins and cork add to a layout!

I added a bunch of the little shooting cork stars and then broke into my Neon Summer and Gotta love Emojis sequins. I used the bright orange sequins from Neon Summer and the black sequins from the Gotta love Emojis. After that I added a little black watercolor splatters and my layout was done!

I hope you liked this layout and I hope to see you play along with the sketch too!! Remember to tag us on instagram so we can see what you create!!

What About Wednesday: Scraplifting Yourself

Aloha!! It’s Hannah here today! I thought I would do something fun today. I thought it would be fun to pick a layout I really liked from my pile of layouts.  (Yes, I said pile. Maybe some would say it’s more like a stack. Though many of them are actually in my kit boxes, so maybe I could find another fun term to use. However at the end of the day they are not in albums yet.)

I am scrap lifting myself. I love to do this from time to time especially when it comes to using a design that I enjoyed. I don’t have to put as much thought into the design and with a change of papers and embellishments the layout could look so much different from the original.

Here is a look at my original layout that I made last year for a series I had on my Youtube Channel called “For The Love Of Homemade Kits”, where I made a stash kit with a recipe.

This time I focused more on the layering aspect. I really wanted more layers be behind my photo. The layout above I really was playing around with self perspective type photos and loved the playful aspect of it. This layout I am doing today is more about sharing and remembering books my daughter has been reading lately.

I want to be able to look back and see what the book covers look like to her favorite and most read books. She literally will ask to stay up late to read a few more extra chapters. It makes my mom book loving heart smile.

I pulled out a ton of book themed embellishments that I have in my stash and in some new collections that I have just bought. Some of the stuff made it to the layout. Some did not, like the stacked books from the Shimelle Little by Little collection and the library journal cards from the Simple Stories Reset Girl Collection.

The key is to try all these pieces out and have them ready and see how everything looks together once you start layering. This original layout doesn’t have a ton of stuff, but it the way I have it layered behind the photo and in some key places that make everything come together.

In the original I also used a really fun cut file that I overlapped with different patterns. I used the cut file as part of my title. This time I choose to go with a big white acrylic word Read from Ali Edwards Story Kits. I really like the simplicity of the white word on the multi colored dot pattern paper. By adding Rockin Pink Ombre Sequins from the store around the title it really draws your eye there.

I layered some ephemera, tags and some speech bubbles at the top of the photo. I finished by adding more Sequins around that cluster. The pink sequins just matches perfectly with the colors in my daughter’s books.

Some small touches I think really finished off the layout, which were a hand drawn border around the layout. Some washi tape in the layers near the embellishment clusters and an extra dose of those Amazing Rockin Pink Ombre Sequins.

Here is one last look at the whole layout!

What About Wednesday: Monochromatic Layout with Layers

13932877_10210738580967273_2143640393516853298_n

Aloha my scrappy friends!!  This past week the weather here in Washington has been so nice, high forties, sunny. It has me thinking about nature. All the photos I have been taking this summer/fall of nature around me.

Also lately I have been in a monochromatic mood. I really have been enjoying mixing different shades of the same color together. I really have been loving focusing on a couple colors that match or compliment each other and use just that. Picking out embellishments that match is like a scavenger hunt in my stash.

This fall I took some photos of the pinecones from our yard. I have been really into taking nature pictures of the things around us. Trying to get creative with my shots and take pictures of things I see everyday but don’t always capture. These are usually things that inspire me when I sit down at my scrap desk.

IMG_2355

I started off using my Shimmerz sprays with a paint brush for different size drops on top of White card stock. I like using a medium size brush so I can get bigger drops but also tap the brush for small splatters. I used Shimmerz Vibez Eggnoggin’ and Bamboo Leaf. I also used Tinsel from Heidi Swapp Color Shine to get a black gray color.

I knew the color would work with the outline I doodled along the outside of the layout. I also knew I wanted to use the black and white line crossed paper from Maggie Holmes Gather Collection to mat my two photos.

IMG_2358

I used lots of layers on this layout. I really wanted a natural feel to them, to mimic the images. I used a past kit from Clique Kits that had similar colors and a fall theme. I Used white doilies, ripped washi tape and Studio Calico wood chips in the layers for a chunky look to my layers.

Like I mentioned I wanted a monochromatic look, so I stuck with green, gray and orange tones throughout my layout. The Evergreen Bough Sequin mix was perfect for this layout. Paired with the Dear Lizzy chipboard Thicker plus signs it added a fun scattering of embellishments that I think didn’t over power the layout.

I added Pretty Little Studio word phrases and labels from a past spring line that was very nature themed. I even made a banner with bits from the labels in the layers.

The felt Evergreen Trees were given to me by a friend and they are so fun and look great tucked in next to my clusters. I used them with some baker’s twine and Maya Road white tassels. I love this element. It really draws your eyes to the photos.

IMG_2353

I really just love how it all turned out and really helps showcase these two really fun and cool pictures of pinecones from my yard. One during the summer when they were covered with sap, and in the fall fallen apart ready to drop seeds for future pine trees. I love that my kids are super thrilled to play and experience this nature around them, by collecting them and examine them.

I love that I get to remember their excitement for learning and experimenting with nature. I hope they don’t lose their wanderlust! Their joy for the beauty and world around them.

IMG_2356

I really, really love these Dear Lizzy Thicker word phrases. I couldn’t help but use one for the title. I layered it on top a Dear Lizzy cut apart that says Bliss Ave. With plus signs and sequins scattered around it, it really is a big focus.

Monday Blog Header

Welcome back to another Make It Yours Monday with SpiegelMom Scraps!!! I hope you guys enjoyed the amazingly awesome Triple Blog Hop and all the incredible projects that were shared!

Today, I have a layout inspired by a heart shaped tag from my daughters new sneakers and a layout that I found on pinterest. I wanted to combine the 2 and was very happy with the finished page! (I want to apologize for the lighting of my photo’s, but a tropical storm stole the sun and I had to take them inside!)

94 Collage

The only Patterned paper I used for this layout was from the Fancy Free collection. I used the soft mint for the foundation, the peachy pink for the mid section and a bit of yellow, mint and peach to make the banners in the top right corner. I added some gold scallop washi tape to secure the banners. After I notched out a half circle, I added my journaling on a shipping tag and tucked it behind the layout in a pocket.

For the mid section of the layout, I made a shaker tag out of another shipping tag and filled it with Spring Blooms Sequins and Gold Confetti Sequins. I added some doodles to the boarder to keep it from getting lost. I adhered a White Doily doily and layered the shaker tag and my photo over top.

A journaling card serves as my title and a few more doodles pulled the shaker, journaling and the title card together. I sprinkled some of the sequins around the page to bring some sparkle around each section! The scalloped washi tape finished off the middle part and I also brought a piece to the bottom left corner to dress is up a bit, along with some sequins. A few splatters of Gold Color Shine and I was Done!

Making Mixed Media Easy

Aloha It’s Hannah here with you today. I am super excited about my first post here on the SpiegelMom Scraps blog!!

Mixed Media is super trendy but can be really intimidating. There is so many things that could go wrong. It can be really messy and unpredictable. If you do it right it really can look awesome and make an unique background that is perfect for the story you are wanting to tell.

Pinterest is a fun place to gain some inspiration for backgrounds. I love using textures and patterns to inspire me. I have been loving circles lately. On Pinterest I had seen a background with tiny circles on it. Using tiny circles in a few areas is a easy way to add color and media to a background without being complicated as well.

I decided to use the end of my pencil easer as my paint brush to dab circles on my white cardstock. I used Shimmerz Dazzlerz in Gummy Bear Blue and Sour apple Green because I knew I wanted to scrap a spring picture of my kids running.

IMG_7915

By randomly places the dots around the layout, overlapping the circles you create a background that is unique. The eraser makes the dots imperfect and the Dazzlers is a little thick which gives texture to the dots when they dry.

You could let each color dry in-between colors, but actually wanted some of the Dazzlerz to mix a little creating a new color. This kind of background could be really busy or really subtle depending on how many dots you add. I went for the middle ground, and added a decent amount but left quite a bit of white space.

Something else that helps add personality to a background is to stamp on it. I have tons of planner or smaller stamps. I knew my little heart stamp would be perfect. I added open and closed hearts to change it up. I just placed them throughout the dots. I used a black Stazon stamp ink, but this would look darling in a different shade ink close to the Dazzlerz colors.

I let the background dry over night. It really didn’t need it though. Allowing you background cardstock to dry before adding layers on it is key. Air drying is best because it cuts on the paper from warping too much. I often use a heat gun slightly to help speed the drying time. Letting me follow through with my thought process on a layout.

I didn’t want to cover most of the dots and hearts I created so I kept my layers behind my photo simple. I used a large glassine bag as one layer. I like the way the background softly peeks through the sides of the bag. I also matted my photo in white. I added two laters of patterned paper in fun artsy and watercolor type of patterns. This helps tie in with the homemade background.

IMG_8096

I also added some very thin washi tape on the background. I added a diagonally striped patterned paper on the side and bottom of the tape. I wanted to use these two areas to help ground my photo and build my embellishment clusters on them.

Take look at each cluster. I absolutely love how they turned out!!

IMG_8089

The little felt clouds in the store are perfect for this layout. I also took a patterned that had clouds on it and fussy cut them out.

IMG_8094

By adding pop dots to some of the clouds and layering them, it really makes the clouds feel like they are floating.

IMG_8092

I used word phrase stickers in similar colors and some die cuts it helps add some other shapes into the mix.

I finished with lots of sequins from both the Spring Blooms and A Day In the Woods Mixes. I love how both these colors picks up colors in the papers and mixed media I used. In the end I just think they look cute and fun!! Cause who doesn’t secretly love sequins!?!

IMG_8088

Inspired by Sunshine and playing in the sun, which my kids love to do. Actually they just love to run around outside, rain or shine, but more in the sun!! I started with a scripted die cut piece. I like the look of a title with different colors and shaped fonts and this layout it just went perfectly to tie all the colors together from the layout.

I hope you were inspired today. Inspired to do a little mixed media on your layouts or try something a little different. I find these things really help me grow my scrappy mind, even if they don’t end up working on a page or project.

have a great Day and I can’t wait to see you around!!
