Working with a Sketch

Hello Folks!

Laura here today with my version of a sketch…

I love working with sketches.  Sometimes I go off on a tangent and the finished layout looks nothing like the sketch, other times I use the sketch very literally.  This was a literal copy up to a point…

I got my ruler out and did a little maths to get my patterned paper sections exact.  I cut duplicate pieces in vellum so I could layer up with foam pads for added dimension and shadows.  They are very subtle layers but, I think, well worth it.

I stuck my glitter spot acetate down with 3d glue gel for even more dimension.  I only used the glue behind the glitter and one spot I knew I would be adding an embellishment.

When I had finished my literal copy I felt the bottom needed something extra so added some bunting.  I used some yellow baker’s twine to anchor my pennants.

When it came to embellishing I added some Salt of the Earth sequins and Shooting Cork Stars.  These stars are quickly becoming a favourite of mine.  They are small enough to add to most layouts without overtaking but still adding the gorgeous cork texture and colour.  They are also easy to alter with gesso or paint if you fancy the texture but not the colour!

Thanks for stopping by today,

Laura

What About Wednesday: Monochromatic Layout with Layers

13932877_10210738580967273_2143640393516853298_n

Aloha my scrappy friends!!  This past week the weather here in Washington has been so nice, high forties, sunny. It has me thinking about nature. All the photos I have been taking this summer/fall of nature around me.

Also lately I have been in a monochromatic mood. I really have been enjoying mixing different shades of the same color together. I really have been loving focusing on a couple colors that match or compliment each other and use just that. Picking out embellishments that match is like a scavenger hunt in my stash.

This fall I took some photos of the pinecones from our yard. I have been really into taking nature pictures of the things around us. Trying to get creative with my shots and take pictures of things I see everyday but don’t always capture. These are usually things that inspire me when I sit down at my scrap desk.

I started off using my Shimmerz sprays with a paint brush for different size drops on top of White card stock. I like using a medium size brush so I can get bigger drops but also tap the brush for small splatters. I used Shimmerz Vibez Eggnoggin’ and Bamboo Leaf. I also used Tinsel from Heidi Swapp Color Shine to get a black gray color.

I knew the color would work with the outline I doodled along the outside of the layout. I also knew I wanted to use the black and white line crossed paper from Maggie Holmes Gather Collection to mat my two photos.

IMG_2358

I used lots of layers on this layout. I really wanted a natural feel to them, to mimic the images. I used a past kit from Clique Kits that had similar colors and a fall theme. I Used white doilies, ripped washi tape and Studio Calico wood chips in the layers for a chunky look to my layers.

Like I mentioned I wanted a monochromatic look, so I stuck with green, gray and orange tones throughout my layout. The Evergreen Bough Sequin mix was perfect for this layout. Paired with the Dear Lizzy chipboard Thicker plus signs it added a fun scattering of embellishments that I think didn’t over power the layout.

I added Pretty Little Studio word phrases and labels from a past spring line that was very nature themed. I even made a banner with bits from the labels in the layers.

The felt Evergreen Trees were given to me by a friend and they are so fun and look great tucked in next to my clusters. I used them with some baker’s twine and Maya Road white tassels. I love this element. It really draws your eyes to the photos.

I really just love how it all turned out and really helps showcase these two really fun and cool pictures of pinecones from my yard. One during the summer when they were covered with sap, and in the fall fallen apart ready to drop seeds for future pine trees. I love that my kids are super thrilled to play and experience this nature around them, by collecting them and examine them.

I love that I get to remember their excitement for learning and experimenting with nature. I hope they don’t lose their wanderlust! Their joy for the beauty and world around them.

IMG_2356

I really, really love these Dear Lizzy Thicker word phrases. I couldn’t help but use one for the title. I layered it on top a Dear Lizzy cut apart that says Bliss Ave. With plus signs and sequins scattered around it, it really is a big focus.

Tuesday's Talent

Hello everyone, Mandi here with my last post. This time it is an anniversary card that features May Arts Burlap String, Tutti Frutti Dazzlerz Texture Paste, Chunky Cork Hearts, Sunny SmilesSilver Stardust Sequin Confetti and Gold Stardust Sequins.

I thought painting have of the hearts with the Dazzlerz was a great way to add a little extra wow. When the paste is wet apply the sequins. I just sprinkled them on to the surface and pressed them in with a stick.

I love who this card looks even when it is laying sown flat.  The sequins on the top and the cluster at the bottom adds a lot of drama without the bulk.

Mandi here stopping by to share a fun technique that uses the Dazzlerz dimensional paste. The supplies I used to create this card is the  Sea U in the Mornin’ Shimmerz DazzlerzMay Arts Burlap String, and A Mermaid’s Tale

To create this foiled and embossed textured paper it is super easy to do and there is no need for any foiling machine.

First, you need to apply a thin layer of dimensional paste to cardstock, make sure it is covered completely. Let it dry to about 5 minutes or  a little longer, it should be tacky. Apply the foil and run it through an embossing machine with the your embossing folder of choice. Remove the foil sheet. If it didn’t cover everything you wanted just grab a new piece of foil and press it onto the spots.

The best way to adhere the string and sequins is to use a fine tip application glue bottle with your favorite liquid adhesive.

Don’t forget to make sure the outside of the envelope matches the card. Create a custom envelop seal with leftover scraps and a circle punch.

Mandi, here. Popping in to share with you a cute baby layout that features the May Arts Burlap StringSea U in the Mornin’ Shimmerz DazzlerzTutti Frutti Dazzlerz Texture PasteCloudy Days FeltiesChunky Cork Hearts and Gold Sequin Confetti.

I love to take bits and pieces to create a cluster which helps draws the eye in to the title area. As you can see here I have felties, cork, string and papers which adds a lot of texture without a lot of bulk, which takes up less room in albums.

To give the embossed cardstock this shine I applied a thin layer of the Dazzlerz. I came across a cool technique the Dazzlerz can be used in. It can exactly be used as an adhesive for foil sheets. Apply a thin layer of the paste to the cardstock, let it get to the tacky stage, maybe five minutes, rub the foil in the area you want and remove. You should be left with something that looks like this.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed this fun technique in how to incorporated the Dazzlerz into your crafty work.

A RAK from Laura

Card and Tags Header

Hello, Laura here today to share a mixed media tag and a little gift wrapping.

IMG_3774

I love to send little RAK’s to my crafty friends, and rather than just pop this gold twine in an envelope I thought I’d have a go at ‘pretty-ing it up’.  I gathered some supplies from SpiegelMom Scraps and some recycled tissue paper…

IMG_3775

I took a blank tag and Pucker Up Pink Dazzlerz.  I put a fairly thick layer through a stencil and while it was still wet I pushed some sequins in to the paste.  As the paste dries it acts like a glue and holds the sequins firmly.  I took a large glassine bag, tore it down to size and ran the bottom edge through my sewing machine.  Then when the tag was dry I layered it upon a doily, wrapped around some of the gorgeous navy twine and added a tiny peg.  I decided at the last minute that the peg needed to be pink too so I gave it a coat of Dazzlerz!

I have used: sequins, Dazzlerz in Pucker Up Pink, a doily, a tag, a peg, a large glassine bag and some twine all from the SpiegelMom Scraps shop.  If you need to stock up you can enter Laura15 at the checkout for a 15% discount.
