Getting my Groove Back!

Hello, guest designer Jenn back with another layout!

If you have kids, then you will know what I mean when I say that September often feels more like the ‘new year’ then January does.  Back to school means the start of a new year for our kids, and also the start to new routines for us parents.  This year in my household we have three big school milestones with our oldest starting junior high, the middle starting his first year of full time school in grade one, and our baby starts kindergarten (sniff sniff 🙁 ).  Everyone has a new schedule to get used to, and it usually takes a little time for us to find our groove.  Because I don’t have a scraproom, and do all my crafting ‘out in the open’ in our living room, I find myself thrown off a little by big changes, and lose my mojo.  Here is what I do to get it back:

Step 1: I kick everyone out of the house… I work full time outside of the house during the day, which means most of my scrapping gets done when everyone is home.  Most of the time I’m happy to work with them around me, and I really do enjoy scrapping away with onlookers and little hands trying to help, but in moments where I need to touch base with my creativity, I like some time alone, which means asking my family to give me 30 minutes.  They don’t actually have to leave the house, but for 30 minutes “Mom” is off duty!

Step 2: I go through my stash and pull out all my favourite things.  Papers I’ve been hoarding, embellishments I’ve really wanted to use that just haven’t found a home yet, and all my staple items.  For me, that’s usually 6×6 paper pads, enamel dots, gold Heidi Swapp Color Shine, and sequins!

Step 3: I go back to the basics!  Why reinvent the wheel?  We all have a comfortable layout design that is our ‘go-to’, so I go to it.  My never-fail layout usually combines a triangle of embellishment clusters, with every embellishment repeated in each cluster, one picture with tons of patterned paper layers behind it, and a sprinkle of shimmer to finish it off.

Step 4: I pick one new thing.  Maybe a new product or a new technique.  Nothing too crazy, just something to add a spark to the layout, something to motivate a little creativity and excitement as you create, that inspires you to get your groove back!!!  Like these beautiful sequins and Shimmerz sprays from SpiegelMom Scraps 🙂

It took a little time and fussing, but I finally got back into my comfort zone and came up with a layout that I really like.  If you have any tips for getting your scrapbooking groove back I’d love to hear them!

I have a process video coming up shortly on my Youtube channel if you’d like to see how I made this layout. Thanks for popping by!!!

Happy Scrapping,

Make It Yours Monday~Tiny Wonders

Happy Monday everyone!!! (groans heard!!) I have a layout for you guys today, that I hope makes your Monday a little better!!!

For this month, we are being inspired by Art, in any form. So instead of choosing just one piece of art, I was inspired by the Creator! I Love Claude Monet’s soft watery pieces and wonderful color pallet. I spotlighted the new Painted Gardens sequin mix on my layout and just LOVED how the purples and reds played so SO well together with the greens in my photo!

I added some soft watercolor to my background, reminiscent of so many Monet paintings, layered some soft pattern papers behind my photo and added a large doily for some added texture. Then, it was time for the gorgeous sequin mix!! I sprinkled the Painted Gardens sequins and it added the perfect pop of color.

I mounted the entire layout on black cardstock of some added drama and to make the colors stand out even more! I added my title to the bottom right corner with some of the pattern papers from behing the photo and I was done!!

I just love how this layout came together and hope you do too!

Head over to the Spiegelmom Scraps shop to get your hands on some of this amazing sequin mix and….

Beach Rainbow with Ali

Hello scrappy friends! I have to tell you guys, when the theme this month was first announced, I was nervous. I don’t know much about art, or being an artist. I like to create, but is it really the same thing? So I started looking for inspiration…and guess what? Ideas started flowing! I love being inspired by something new, and this was just the mojo kick I needed. As I was looking for paintings that inspired me, I found that something else happened, I started to become inspired by the styles and techniques, just as much as the finished work. Just like in scrapbooking, for me, sometimes it is more about the process. One technique that really stuck out to me is pointillism! I love the look of a bunch of small dots coming together to create an image. Then it dawned on me, I could do pointillism, but with sequins!! So I set off to create my masterpiece…I knew I wanted to do a layout about the gorgeous rainbow we saw at the beach. So I started trying to create a sequin rainbow, which I will not show you because it ended in disaster. My 6 year old’s response was “that looks crazy mama.” He has good judgement, so I scrapped that, or…um…I trashed it, and moved on. I decided to fully embrace the beach motif instead. I started with some corky hearts in the bottom corner and had a sequin wave crashing against them!I really love how this turned out. I used Pandora’s Ombre for the blues, and Wedding Bells for the white. I love how the Wedding Bells mix also has some little silver stars and different sizes, it really adds to the texture!

I knew that with such a huge statement on the page, I didn’t need to do much more than a title and some journaling…but let’s not forget about photos! So I took my photos and cut them into letters for my title-crazy right? I actually love how that came out. I used one photo of the rainbow and a few beach pics for my title. I backed them with some patterned paper from Pink Paislee Summer Lights. I also included another shot of the rainbow and some journaling about our trip! I few embellishments from Summer Lights and a sprinkle of the brand new (and stunning) Painted Gardens sequins and I called it quits…because frankly, this layout was a LOT of work! I am a fast scrapper, a layout usually takes me 30 minutes (typically broken into 3, 10 minute sittings!) but this took me a couple hours! Yikes! So worth it though!

Have you checked out all of the new release sequins? Jody and Lisa designed them, and oh my wow! They are sparkler-tastic! Also, the shop has a bunch of clearance items right now, and there may even be some cork left too!

Cards with Karla – Quick and Easy Artsy Thank You Card!

Hello friends! Karla here today with a quick and easy Thank You card! I don’t know about you, but I always find myself in need of an extra Thank You card – so that’s something I need to make an effort to make more of. This month, our SMS theme is ‘Artsy’ – so the perfect opportunity! When I think of artsy, the first thing that comes to mind is watercolour, so this watercolour paper pad I recently picked up at Michaels was the perfect thing to pair with this month’s beautiful new sequin mixes – Painted Gardens and On Pointe.

I cut out the Thank You sentiment from the cut apart sheet included in the paper pad and added Distress Oxide Ink around the edge as well as a hand drawn stitching line. I found a few stickers that went well and then stamped on the circle stamps from the Wild Whisper Out & About stamp set. This created the perfect area to place these beautiful sequins!

Here’s a look at these beautiful sequin mixes –Painted Gardens and On Pointe. Inside, I stamped the Wild Whisper circle stamp again and added more sequins. I just love adding sequins to the inside of my cards!

Documenting on Vacation

Hello, I’m Jenn, a guest designer for the month 🙂

Wow, I can’t believe it’s back to school already… did that summer fly by or what? We’re nearing the end of our 6 week cross-country trip, with only a few days left to go, then back to reality we go.  It’s been a really amazing trip, but six weeks is a long time to go without any scrapbooking so I’m really glad I brought along a few crafty supplies to document my trip.  I’ve really enjoyed the Traveler’s Notebook style and I find it has helped me out quite a bit with keeping track of everything we’ve done and remembering all the little moments throughout our trip.  With my ZIP printer as a way of printing little pictures, I’ve been able to use a combination of journaling, pictures, and all the ephemera (so so so much ephemera) I’ve been collecting to document our trip easily.  It’s also given me a little crafty “save my sanity” time to myself, which has been key to surviving six weeks on the road with the family!!!

This layout documents our evening in Old Quebec City.  I really wanted to show that just because you are on the road, using a notebook, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get a little fancy and creative with your layouts.  I absolutely love sequins so, of course, I brought some with me on the trip, and I thought it would be fun to make a little peek-through window with some sequins inside.

The key to a layout like this one is to go with the flow! I don’t have all the tools with me that I would normally use to make a shaker pocket so I had to give myself permission to just go with the flow and embrace the imperfection of it.  I used a photo pocket I brought with me, as the window.  My little scissors to cut it out, and washi tape to hide the crooked lines.  My window is a little lop-sided and it’s slightly off center, but I love how it invites you to take a glimpse at the cobble stone streets and incredible architecture hiding behind it.  T/he sequins add a ton of sparkle and it is definitely an unexpected feature to come across as you flip through the notebook.

I have to keep reminding myself that I need to keep my embellishments flat.  I specifically left all my bulky embellishments at home and just brought flat stickers, die cuts, flat letter stickers, washi tape, and stamps.  They are all perfect ways to add those fun extra details to the page without adding extra dimension, and the sequins give the effect of dimension without causing bulk.

In total, this layout took me about 25 minutes, which was exactly the amount of ‘me time’ I needed this evening after a 7 hour drive.  I had so much fun bringing this idea to life and I love how it turned out 🙂  Please feel free to check out my process video if you’d like to see how I did it!!!

Thanks so much for popping by 🙂

Happy Scrapping,

Make It Yours Monday~ I LOVE…

HAPPY Labor Day everyone!! I hope you are all enjoying the holiday (here in the US) Today, I have a layout for you inspired by the soft colors and feelings of a few painting I just love to look at! Monet is a strong influence for me with all his beautiful colors and light feeling of his work

I began my layout by mating a pink and black cardstock under a piece of white American Crafts cardstock. I also mated the photo in the same colors, going the opposite way. I used some Shimmerz mists in Night Moves to create some splatters and then, I started on the base of my page.

I used a set of coordinating washi tapes and just put strips down in a pattern that looked good to the eye. I backed my photo with an 8″ doily from the shop to add a softer feel against the straight edges of the washi tape strips. To bring sparkle and shine to the page, I used a couple of different mixes to get just the right colors. Pandora’s Ombre, Rockin Pink Ombre and Morning Dew Drops all brought just the sparkle needed to make the layout shine!

My title added to the top left and bottom right helps keep the eyes moving about the page and really compliment the softer colors with the sparkly black!

Today’s layout was a rather quick and simple page, but all the Spiegelmom Scraps products really helped pull it together and give it just the right touches. Stop by the shop and pick some of these amazing products for yourself and….
